What does (s) and (m) mean on ranks?

What does (s) and (m) mean on ranks?

PostMon Feb 16, 2015 2:10 am

I'm seeing many theater organ ranks that have (s) and (m) after them. What do they stand for and what is the significance? Can't find this info on Google...thanks.

The short answer is Solo and Main.referring to 2 of the pipe chambers generally found in a theatre pipe organ installation. In addition, in some larger TPO installations, there is a String Chamber such as referenced here

http://alabamatheatre.com/about-the-alabama/the-mighty-wurlitzer

A virtual tour of the Main Pipe Chamber here:

http://alabamatheatreorgan.com/Main.html

A virtual tour of the Solo chamber here:

http://alabamatheatreorgan.com/Solo.html

The "names" of these pipe chambers gives an idea of the particular pipe ranks (and percussions) found in a given chamber. If you want to do some further research, check out this reference:

One more question if you're still there, can you point me to some website that lays out the rank position per chamber? Which ranks are on the main left and which go solo right? Also, I'm trying to find out what 'Ten C' means on some organ tabs...

An idea of rank arrangement per chamber is listed here

http://alabamatheatre.com/about-the-alabama/the-mighty-wurlitzer.

As well, the ranks contained in the String Chamber. Obviously this is a sizable instrument. That arrangement varied somewhat by the organ builder, the organ size, the budget of the customer as well as, to some degree, the venue.

Another arrangement, here with 5 chambers, the Atlanta Fox Theatre Möller Opus 5566 Theater Organ.

http://dobywood.com/FoxTheatreAtlanta/Fox-Moeller-Organ.html

And here, the 1926 Barton Theatre Organ at the Grand Theatre in Fitzgerald, Georgia:

http://pipe-organ.com/Fitzgerald.shtm

Ten C or Tenor C refers to the fact that those particular ranks that are labeled that way do not extended (on the low end) all the way down to 16' pitch and stop at C below middle C thus (Tenor C).
