A free gift for HW 4.1 users with a LaunchPad ...

PostMon Aug 18, 2014 4:02 am

Greetings all ...

Following the release of version 4.1 of Hauptwerk, all users now have access to the use of Novation Launchpads for organ control. For sometime I have been using two of these and they are thoroughly recommended as a reasonably priced way of getting a very useful set of "physical" buttons for control of your stops and couplers, as well as other things (cued favourite organs, MIDI and Audio recording, Close Hauptwerk, Close computer etc). In my opinion, this method of control is superior to the touchscreen method (and I have that as well).

Therefore, I am making available one overlay from my published series of LaunchPad Overlays as an illustration of how they may be implemented: the Overlay I am issuing is that for a single launchpad for the St. Anne's organ as delivered with Hauptwerk. It can be dowloaded from:
http://my-music.mine.nu/images/hw_forum/stannes.pdf
It contains two overlays, one being reversed so as to reduce finger wear on the print. Full instructions on how to print the overlay are included.

Good luck and best wishes!

Many thanks for your generosity, Ken. I'm tempted to try touchpads as an alternative to another touchscreen. What advantages do the touchpads offer?

Thanks James ...

... in my opinion, LaunchPads have several advantages over touchscreens:

1. There are physical buttons to press;
2. The action is more positive and less error-prone than the touchscreen;
3. Large organs can be accommodated on multiple touchpads at a lower cost than using the equivalent number of touchscreens;
4. Illuminated buttons give positive confirmation of selected stops - some organs do not clearly indicate selected stops;
5. They usually occupy less space on the console than touchscreens.
There may be more, of course!

Best wishes,

Ken

I'm venturing down the LaunchPad path, although I'm attempting to use minis. My idea is similar to yours in that I was going to use acetate/film as an overlay on the buttons. That didn't work as well as I'd intended, but I'm changing gears and am going to try Velum next.

Whatever the case, I'm struggling with how to attach the overlays so they are easy to swap out, but stay in place reasonably well. What have you found to work? It is my intention to have these standing pretty much straight up and down (similar to drawknobs).

Thanks for your advice!

if you get very small rare earth magnets you can glue a couple of small metal pieces to the launchpads and glue magnets to the corners of all your overlays (works better if the overlay has a border made of paper/cardboard to give it more heft) and do it that way, I have magnets on mine and they never move.

OTOH I did go for the heavy paper approach vs overlay (with squares cut out of the paper where the buttons are, and names of the stops above/below) as I preferred the tactile feel of the actual buttons as opposed to overlay plastic

After looking at the various ways, such as magnets, I decided to keep it simple. I use Blu-Tack, described in Wikipedia as a re-usable putty-like pressure sensitive adhesive product. For me it works well. To change to another organ I just rip off the old overlay and press down the new organ overlay. Simple and effective.
I use acetate transparencies printed on a laser printer. I don't even worry about reverse printing. I've been using them for about a year now with no problem. Eventually if some print wears off I will just print another overlay.

Now if there were just a LaunchPad-like device with programmable-text buttons. . .

Hello, Qu ...

I use those little circular Velcro tabs that you can get in stationery shops. Just to, one in each top corner is very easy to manage.

All the best

Ken.

Hi Qudomo,

I use velcro to attach mine, and this works very well. A single strip of velcro runs across the top of the overlay. Removing one set of overlays and installing another takes less time than for the second sample set to load into Hauptwerk. I tried magnets at first, but I find that the velcro solution is totally stable.

Thanks for the suggestions! I have already headed down the path of the round velcro buttons. Although it kind of works, something about it is not ideal. I think the smaller form factor makes the pressing of the buttons more "iffy". Of course, a lot of this has to do with the fact that I don't have it mounted securely, which is something else I need to tackle. HW - a project that never ends! I sometimes wonder what I got myself into!

It is, however, fun!

As a follow up from my earlier post re using Blu-Tack to hold transparencies to the Launchpad. Picking up the Velcro idea from others I have now scrapped Blu-Tack, Velcro a much better idea.
