Visiting Tuscany and Barcelona--organs?

PostTue Mar 31, 2015 8:49 pm

Im reaching out to the Hauptwerk community for help. I'm visiting Florence, Tuscany and Barcelona/Sitges in late May early June. I'd love to see (or get a chance to play) an organ in one of these places while I'm there. Would anyone know anyone who might be willing to show me an organ. Obviously, a prominent organ would be wonderful (St Croce in Florence?, the cathedrals in Barcelona?). I have been to Sitges before and I recall a beautiful baroque organ in the San Bartolome church there as well. That particularly would be wonderful. It may be wishful thinking but I thought I would take a shot. I play primarily Bach and would just love a chance to see an organ maybe after Mass or a convenient time.

If anyone could help me please let me know. Particularly interested in Sitges. Thank you.

Here are places with three organs we've seen and remembered - I've heard two of them but not played them...
1. Palau Guell (http://palauguell.cat/come-palace) where there is an interesting pipe organ (which is played during the day (via a midi player).
2. Sagrada Familia (http://www.sagradafamilia.cat/sf-eng/) which is now fairly complete and houses a rather nice organ behind the high altar which is again played during the day (usually by a midi player).
3. Palau de La Musica Catalana (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palau_de_la_M%C3%BAsica_Catalana) where there is a large instrument (which I’ve not heard).

There are photographs etc. on the web - just search with "organ" after the name of the location.

Enjoy!

If you are interested in organ building, perhaps I could arrange a visit to Grenzing new work place near to Barcelona (El Papiol). If so. please send me a PM.

The abbey at Montserrat is well worth a visit. The organ is fairly new and I haven't played it, but it sounded good when I was there last week. The monastery is well worth a visit in any case and is very easy to get to by train from Barcelona.
Best wishes,
Marcus

I don't know how often it's played, but Santa Maria della Scala in Siena, Tuscany has a famous 1519 Piffaro.

Hello Jim,

If you play primarily Bach, I would recommend these organs (one hour and a half from Barcelona):

Cathedral of Tarragona:

Monastery of Poblet:

Thanks to all for great info! Would anyone know a contact in any of these places? Perhaps it's wishful thinking but I would love an opportunity to play or at least see an organ. Looks like even Sitges has a nice baroque organ. :)

Other ones to remember:
The Music Museum of Barcelona has several antique organs and also a working Zell harpsichord (The Hauslaib and Zell have been sampled for Hauptwerk, but alas are in HW1 format)
Pistoia (Which hopefully is not too far from Florence, pardon my geography if it is) has a famous Hermans organ from 1664 - An example of a Dutch organ builder trying to build an organ to suit the Italian tastes.
Santissima Annunziata in Florence has a beautiful organ from 1521 (!) - there're videos of Simone Stella playing Frescobaldi on that organ on Youtube.
By the way, here are some former Organ tours in italy or Spain by Pipedreams and such; you should look into the featured organs in these.
Pipedreams 2003 in Italy: http://www.michaelise.com/italy/index.html, http://pipedreams.publicradio.org/event ... taly_2003/
An upcoming one for Italy this year: http://www.musicalcollaborations.org/#! ... -2015/cs47
Italy One from 2012: https://music.ku.edu/sites/music.drupal ... ochure.pdf

Spain by Pipedreams: http://pipedreams.publicradio.org/tour/ ... sttrip.pdf
Good luck, Achenpigeon

Thanks to all again for your kind replies. I am going to email the Sitges church and hopefully see the organ there or some other place in/near Barcelona!
