Play Estey e-Rolls on Hauptwerk Organs

PostMon Mar 07, 2016 2:21 pm

Hi

I have recently uploaded the latest update of my Estey e-roll player, eplayWin32
to my website at http://midimusic.github.io This player will play any Estey e-roll
on a Hauptwerk organ. The program runs on a Windows computer and is free to download
and free to use.

There are over 500 Estey e-rolls located in a fully indexed Estey archive on my site above.
You can download as many or as few as you please all completely free.

An e-roll is a scanned midi image of the original paper music roll. Although these
rolls were made around 90 years ago they contain many good classical tunes.

eplayWin32 plays these rolls and produces a midi output which can be fed via a real
or virtual midi cable to the Hauptwerk organ's midi input. Thus the organ can be
installed on the same or any other computer. The manuals, pedals, stops, couplers
and swell are all functional. Just as Estey originally intended.

The player will also optionally play other organs.

Hi again

My topic has had 231 views and not a single comment from anyone!

Either it has worked perfectly and nobody has needed to ask any questions or
alternatively no-body is interested.

Please make an effort to let me know whether I am wasting my time by
flogging a dead horse or whether it really does work so well that nobody
needs to comment.

By the way eplayWin32 now runs on an iMac or Linux computer under wine
just the same as it runs in Windows.

Please see my website for details. http://midimusic.github.io/tech

For some unknown reason I missed your original post. I just left your web site and am really impressed with the quality of your project. I'll be out of town for a week but am anxious to download and try these rolls.

Hi
I would love to play Estey and Wurlitzer rolls on my MacPro. However, I was unable to install the files. I have two different systems: a MacPro running 10.6.8, and one running 10.7.5. Neither would allow me to open and install the files; the 10.6.8 wanted me to try to open the files as an administrator, what ever that means, and on the 10.7.5 I got this: The file "/Users/jamesrussell/Desktop/setup_eplayWin32V2_15c/setup_eplayWin32V2_15c.exe" does not appear to be compressed or encoded. It is advised that you obtain further information about the contents of this file from the sender or provider of the file.
Do you have any other suggestions?
Thanks,
James

Yes it appears to be Windows only. However, I downloaded the files that are supposed to be for a Mac. The web site clearly states this.
Download setup_eplayWin32V2_15c.zip This is the latest.
Version 2.15c will install and run just the same on an iMac and Linux as it does on Windows. It has all the latest internal improvements, some of which are indicated above
.

That is not a Mac file. Notice "Win" in the name.

The two latest files are on lines above that download indication.

Go back to the page http://midimusic.github.io/tech/
And look for....
Download eplay_package_v3.4.zip Directly plays Wurlitzer and Estey e-rolls (Windows Only).
Download eplaymacpkgV3.4.zip Directly plays Wurlitzer and Estey e-rolls (iMac Only).

Hi Telemanr
Downloading the "mac" file results in this:
Last login: Sun Apr 10 11:33:07 on console
new-host:~ jamesrussell$ /Users/jamesrussell/Desktop/eplaymacpkgV3.4/eplayesteymac ; exit;
Illegal instruction: 4
logout

[Process completed]

This "mac" file is dated from 2015, whereas the other, recomended to work with the imac, is from 2016. CSW900 does state that his mac used for testing had Yosemite (10.10) operating system, but that he thought it should work with earlier systems. Since my Huptwerk set up works flawlessly as is, I reluctantly must conclude that it is not for me, without feedback from others that the Estey Player will actually work.

Run the software on any PC or compatible Mac to translate one or more of the Estey files into MIDI file(s) for use with Hauptwerk. Then copy the MIDI file to the HW computer. No need to run the program itself on your organ computer.

Hi All

Thanks for the feedback - may I now comment on the comments.

When I first tried Wine - many years ago - it was hopeless, however now it
has improved so much that you can run almost any Windows program on
an iMac.

Once Wine has been installed you can install and run many Windows programs on
an iMac just the same as if you were using Windows.

Rules for running eplayWin32 on an iMac (or a Mac if you have a recent one).

1) The Mac MUST have an Intel processor.
2) You must install a recent (preferably the latest) version of Wine.
3) Download the latest eplayWin32, currently eplayWin32V2_15c.zip.
4) Unzip it, read the instructions carefully and follow them. On a Mac
it is easiest just to copy the files to a location of your choice rather than
using the installer - you will then know where they are.

Just double click the .exe and it will run.

If you have tried eplayWin32 and failed, please try again - it DOES work.

Good luck

An afterthought:

There are some circumstances where you might not wish to run other software
on your organ computer.

You do not have to run eplayWin32 on the same computer as your organ. You
can run it on another computer (an old Windows laptop would work nicely) and
connect it to your organ via two usb to midi adaptor cables connected end to end.

In this case you would need a 5 pin DIN (MIDI to MIDI) cable coupler.

You can alternately use a MIDI combiner such as made by MIDI Solutions of Canada This box has 2 - MIDI input connectors and 1 - MIDI output connector and does what (obviously) the name implies.
