Radio France Concert Hall Organ

PostThu Sep 15, 2016 11:49 am

I just enjoyed a new recording available on the Pipedreams website, for the Inaugural Concert of the new Grenzing Organ in the Radio France Concert Hall, Paris (held last May):

http://pipedreams.publicradio.org/listings/2016/1637/

One interesting feature of the Organ is a new "proportional transmission" system, which enables the remote Console to function exactly like the Tracker Console. A clever magnetic system (using Hall Effect sensors in all of the keyboards) allows the actual wind-chest valve for each pipe to track exactly with the motion and position of the Key... allowing fast or slow attacks and releases, or even holding the valve only partially open... and so forth.

All of the Tracker effects which were surely (undesired) incidental consequences for the early Organ Builders, but which have come to be seen today as having possible "expressive value".

The system was invented in Quebec, and is discussed on the company's website:

There are some videos there showing this mechanism on an Instrument by Pasi Organbuilders of Washington State. They can even put a "dummy wind-chest" inside the Console, so the keys really do physically open Valves against Air Pressure (but just no pipes happen to be present there...), giving the exact Tracker Feel desired. Another benefit is that the Touch will never become too heavy, even playing Full Organ with all Couplers active. Like Barker Levers, but silent.

Conceptually, this is like having a Digital Piano whose keyboard throws real hammers (but just no strings happen to be present there...)
