First, there are many 4-manual sample sets, so from the viewpoint of authenticity it is certainly not a mad idea to have 4 manuals.

Second, in DIY situations I think it might actully be cheaper and easier to stack two sets of 2 manuals than to laboriously add two or three piston rails.

---- or as I do on my 3 manual setup. Lower two manuals the Hammond SX2500. The one upper manual is the Edirol PCR800 which has one switch to turn it into the fourth manual. Hence with a 3 manual looking organ I have 4 manuals to utilise.

Sorry to derail this post, but some past experiences we (all) have had
brought us to a fuller appreciation of Hauptwerk regardless of how many
manuals, I know it did for me. Kind of an insatiable appetite for organ.

Actually I'm more impressed by the Sanfilippo 5/80 Wurlizer. Been to several concerts at the residence.
Talk about a wow factor.

Can't forget my first favorite - the Chicago Stadium Barton.

To be really honest, I've certainly never played anything, at all, for which I really needed my four manuals. I wanted them simply because I fell in love with the Salisbury, and it's a four manual instrument. However, I do have to admit that it is a lot of fun when folks see my console for the first time, because of the "wow" factor!

I know, I'm shameless!

And 5 manuals? Oh yea that's for the obligatory photo op especially for CD covers and artist's publicity shots.
