crescendo piston

PostTue May 09, 2017 9:38 pm

Does anyone know what a crescendo piston is supposed to do? I've seen it online on a few organs. Maybe it is a British thing? One organ had such a button where a coupler rail often goes, I think it was a Copeman Hart.

I think it might select an alternative crescendo sequence (cf Rogers)
7. Crescendo B Piston – causes the crescendo shoe to produce an alternate sequence of stops from softest to loudest. It is “reversible.”

It could also enable or disable the crescendo pedal.

Some sample sets (and real organs) have a piston to enable or disable the crescendo pedal to prevent accidents. St Anne's Moseley has 3 such pistons - one for each department.

Perhaps it is a stepper piston which upon repeated depressions retrieves a sequence of stop combinations.
