Buying second hand sample sets?

PostSat Jun 10, 2017 8:54 pm

Just saw a sample set for sale (used) on Ebay. Does that even work? Doesn't one need a dongle update or key or something?

Hello Scott,

Whether a sample set is allowed to be re-sold depends on the sample set producer's licence agreement. Milan Digital Audio samples are allowed to be re-sold, for example (although listings for second-hand sample sets aren't allowed in the 'for sale / wanted' section of our forum).

If the sample set is licensed via the USB key then transferring it to another user requires several key updates via us (one to remove it from the seller's key, one to verify that the removal update has been applied, one to add it to the buyer's key). If somebody does agree to sell a sample set privately then the seller needs to contact us privately to let us know the details, including the sample set name and the buyer's name and email address, and we will then arrange the licence transfer accordingly.
Best regards, Martin.

Thanks Martin, it's a Sonus Paradisi set. I'm not interested, I was just curious.

In the EU it seems to be legal to resell and buy second hand software anyway. Licenses that prohibit second hand sale are void in the EU, based on a court ruling between the Oracle and UsedSoft companies. I don't know how the regulations are outside the EU.

Unfortunately it seems that sometimes illegal copies of unprotected sample sets are being spread. This is very immoral and damaging towards hard working sample set producers. If you resell an unprotected sample set, sell it only once and remove it completely..
