3M as in three million $$ restorad Aeolian-Skinner

PostSat Oct 13, 2018 9:42 pm

A/S organs have been a topic here in the past with many sample(d) sets available for use with Hauptwerk. Maybe this one sometime in the future? Here's hoping. 8)

This Aeolian-Skinner pipe organ was first installed at the Northrop Auditorium, Minneapolis, Minn between 1932 to 1936. It’s considered one of the most notable concert hall pipe organs in the country.

After 18 months and $3 million, the Aeolian-Skinner pipe organ at Northrop Auditorium will be heard again this fall.

The famed instrument, whose nearly 7,000 pipes were packed away during a renovation of the venue five years ago, then sent to Boston for painstaking restoration, will feature in the Oct. 12-13 world premiere of "What Do We Make of Bach?" by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer John Harbison, a commissioned work to be performed by the Minnesota Orchestra.

I was there for the concert Friday Oct. 12, and the organ is sounding fine!

Do note, this is an early Æolian-Skinner, so it is a transitional instrument, with characteristics of both E.M. Skinner and G. Donald Harrison....

I’m looking forward to Nathan Laube’s cincert there in December, it will be the first solo concert of the restored instrument.

Interesting comment, Jonathon. I've read about some of the issues between Skinner and Harrison. Still from the specs, looks to be quite a nice instrument. Any chance of it being sampled? Esp since there are quite a few (of us) Skinner fans out here.

You won't regret going to Nathan Laube's concert. He is in a word, fantastic. I've been to several of his earlier concerts around Chicago. Everytime, he gets better.

Ed
