Most popular HW organ

Hi All HW users

Apart from St Annes - which are the most popular/most played Hauptwerk organs?

There are so many sample sets (organs) that I have never heard of that I am wondering whether any of them are used much by real organists.

I would like to know the five most popular organs so that I can support them in eplayOrgan for translating their midi files from one organ to play correctly on another different organ.

If you do not yet know what eplayOrgan is - see my website

Look on the all time charts on Contrebombarde. These are a good marker which samplesets are popular.

After looking at your web site, it seems to me that instead of seeking the most popular HW instrument, you should focus on the HW theater organs (there are some very good ones). The most popular HW organs are best suited for classical organ literature.

Thanks - so far.

I am thinking more in terms of using eplayOrgan to translate organ midi files rather than playing it from a console. I would like to have some suggestions of actual organs rather than general comments.

eplayOrgan can be configured to play ANY HW organ (up to 3 manuals) from midi files and can translate the midi files produced by these organs to play on ANY other HW organ. It can do this only after eplayOrgan has been configured to play them.

Anyone with the knowledge and a bit of spare time can do this configuring but I was planning to configure a few organs myself to get the ball rolling. Since I do not want to waste my time configuring seldom played organs I need to know the most popular/played organs.

At Stan's Music Parlor ... =bookmarks, I host more full organ recitals each year than any other venue I know about in California--15 last year. Organists select from my collection of more than 100 sample sets. Here is a list of their 10 favorites for performance:

1730 Tobias Heinrich Gottfried Trost: Evangelische Lutherische Stadtkirche, Waltershausen, Thüringen, Germany

1735 Gottfried Silbermann: St. Peter's Church, Freiberg, Germany ... irche.html

1737 Michael Engler: Mary's Church, Krzeszow, Poland ... oland.html

1775 Fr. Isnard: Basilique Sainte-Marie-Madeleine, St. Maximim, Provence, France ... rance.html

1885 A. Cavaille-Coll: St. Etienne Abbey, Caen, France ... ienne.html

1916 E.F. Walcker: Martinikerk, Doesburg, Netherlands ... organ.html

1973 Marcussen & Son: Laurenskerk, Rotterdam, Netherlands ... organ.html

1983 Schoenstein/1957 Aeolian-Skinner: First Covenant Church, Oakland, California ... organ.html

2000 Eisenbarth: St. Bartholomäus Church, Friesach, Austria

2007 Tomaš Močnik: Church of our Lady in Adergas, Velesovo, Slovenia ... venia.html

I agree with Stan's list and the Armley Schulze. I would add the following:

1721 Arp Schnitger: St. Michael's in Zwolle, Netherlands ... chael.html

1877 Henry Willis: Salisbury Cathedral, Salisbury, England ... nstruments

2012 Metzler: Església Abacial de Santa Maria de Poblet, Tarragona, Spain ... gan-op-651

Hi All

Many thanks for the suggestions, I am now overwhelmed and it will take me a while to consider and catch up with all the suggestions and possibilities.

In the mean time I have finished implementing the Armley Schulze organ and it is working beautifully. I managed to find all of the stop NRPN's and other details I needed to know on line. I also found what is probably the ONLY Armley Schulze midi file on line to test the resulting organ. This organ will be included in the next issue (V3.0b) of eplayOrgan.

I was going to attach an Armley Schulze midi file which I have recorded but there seems to be no way to add it to this post. I may put it on to Contrebombarde later along with an .mp3 recording.

Also I may need to ask for NRPN details of some of the other organs so that I can implement them. I will see what is on line first and come back later. I will also need at least one midi file recorded on each of the target organs - again I will see what is already on line and come back if necessary.

I will hazard a guess that the sample set producers will have something to say about using their sets in this manner. As I understand it, many of the sample sets in the mentioned lists do not allow CODM use of their work. Asking our members to participate in helping this endeavor may require special permission from the sample set producers.

Hi James

I think you have got entirely the wrong idea.

I am not using HW CODM or HW sample sets.

Progress report:

The Armley Schulze is now available in the latest eplayOrgan and works well within itself. However the quantity of weird sysex events in its midi files have caused my midi recorder to choke when recording translated output. I have cured the choking and improved the virtual organist so he now makes better choices. The tremolo is also in.

The next organ will be Salisbury Willis. I have all the required information and have it working. This organ will be in the next release. As I have only three manuals I have omitted the solo, which is seldom played. (I suspect it may be too far away to reach conveniently.)

Other organs will be produced later, I am still investigating which will be the next one but will favour the organ with the most midi files on Contrabombarde. So if you want your organ to be included the sooner you submit some midis the more likely your organ will be included.

Progress Update:

I now have the Salisbury finished and have also implemented the Cavaille-Coll at Caen and the Eisenbarth at Friesach. All are working well. I had no trouble finding suitable midi files to test them. March of the Bowmen was very useful and I can translate this to any appropriate organ. Also many other midis work OK - but are of variable quality.

I am not planning to implement any other organs before the next issue V3.0c of eplayOrgan which I expect will soon be available on my website.

There was a slight problem with the manual order on the two European organs but I solved it by ignoring what the makers called the manuals and used my standard: This is pedal and great - names always OK and always in the same position. Other names are resolved by making the enclosed division always Swell and the other division always Acc. This seems to me to work OK.

I found one or two bugs in the translation process which are now fixed. Currently there is still a minor bug in the swell pedal code output when translate input is active. This will be fixed.

Further progress update:

Version 3.0c of eplayOrgan is now on line and you can try it out on the additional popular HW organs it now contains.

I am continuing to make improvements and have now added the capability to export the current organ, this is working at present. I am also adding the capability to import organs. These features combined make it possible to design your own collection of organs which are immediately available and to add others when they become available.

I anticipate that, in future, all organs will be available as separate entities which may be published and added as and when needed. This is more flexible than having all the organs in one large file.

Hello csw900,

We've received complaints from other forum users about your above postings. Please keep on topic of your original post question. If you have something additional to offer please create a new post as long as it is related to Hauptwerk and Hauptwerk instruments. Thank you!

I don't really know about their objective popularity, but I know that my favourite is the 1775 Sainte Marie-Madeleine one, it was used in the first Hauptwerk recording I've ran into online and it has remained my personal favourite since then!
