The question - why buy a cow (unless you are a dairy farmer) when all you want is a quart of milk? :o

The word - A la carte - comes to mind. 8)

I've been reading (in my spare time) a biography of E M Skinner where he focused many times of combinations of stops that really worked well together. Not as much on large full organ "stuff". I sometimes chuckle when I see a "toaster" organist having all the stop tabs on with the expression pedals maxed, maybe trying to get that "full" sound. Doesn't work that way. I've gotten some quite full sounds on larger organs with just a few (of the right) stops drawn. :wink:

Another "plug" for Armely Schulze - there are vast numbers of stop combinations that are "meant" for each other. I have yet to find any combinations that don't work.

Let me make another remark: We are since a lot of time develloper of specialised software in a very small medical market. Years ago we had the problem with piracy and hacking the locked software too. But when we made the price of the software only the half and offered it more modular, we sold 4 (!) times more and made a lot of money (forget the piracy!).).

As I pointed out in a recent, and apparently now deleted, thread here, the music industry gave up on copy protection, in part because it was so burdensome to the consumer that it had the counter-result of encouraging people to seek out the pirate's unprotected versions. And, in part, because Apple iTunes demonstrated that most consumers would gladly pay for their music if it was free of copy protection, unbundled from the requirement of purchasing an album, and at a fair price-point.

Increased digital "security", i.e. copy-protection, is never beneficial to the consumer and, I believe, can be of questionable benefit to the software developer and content producer. The need to protect one's work from piracy is understandable, but places developers and producers between a rock and a hard spot.

On the one hand, rampant piracy will destroy their business, while on the other, burdensome protection schemes that inconvenience their consumers and put their purchase investments at financial risk will have the same result. It's important to realize that no matter how robust the copy-protection is, piracy will never be totally eliminated and that the more burdensome and expensive the product becomes to use, the more piracy will occur. This suggests that the best strategy is a combination of security measures and an approach to marketing and pricing that makes pirated versions less desirable.

Certainly agree. That, however, approaches quite a fine line. And, too, the cost of this anti-privacy protection needs to somehow be added to the cost of the end product.

As the old philosophy once said: "You can please some of the people some of the time, but never all of the people all of the time."

A friend is a "professional" musician who very much totally enjoys performing. His fees are only the cost of transportation. As he told me, he supports his "habit" by having a day job to put bread on the table. No doubt this isn't a solution for many folks.

Hi Brett, I’ve just noticed your post, which is great to hear! I’m not sure if you have had a chance to read my emails, but I am at the stage of wanting to set up protection for my latest sample set, and I need your help with enabling the encryption functionality in Hauptwerk in order to get the rest of the instrument out for extended testing. If it were any help to you, I would be happy to offer to help test your new encryption model? Please do get in touch if I can help. I agree wholeheartedly with the previous posts, that protecting against piracy is absolutely essential to ensure there is a viable business model for sample set producers, which in turn alllows new instruments to be sampled for our enjoyment!

@MDA

Given the limitations of the, now dated, HASP HL licence system, will this security update mean a change of USB dongle and licence system?

I am wondering what the changes will mean for us as end users...

As a user sharing the Hauptwerk license between two consoles located in different places, and therefore at the risk of loss, theft, or damage to the USB dongle, I would appreciate a lot if MDA developers would make a dual licensing system, being it offline or online at user's choice.
