iLok used with a VPN issues

I use a VPN (ExpressVPN) at all times for enhanced security. I have found that when I am connected to the Internet through it the iLok license manager can behave oddly. Sometimes, when I try to launch it, the program freezes and displays only a blank white window and I can only close it by terminating the process with task manager. Other times it runs but says "Operation in progress" for several minutes before finally showing the main interface. The problems are quite intermittent but I've found that in every case they are remedied by simply disconnecting from the VPN. I don't know how many are having issues with iLok but if you are using a VPN you may want to try disabling it and see if that helps.
