Xeon 2800DP/1M/800

PostFri Feb 02, 2007 3:15 pm

I just had (2) Xeon processors "fall into my lap" from a failed Server motherboard. The people that had them have decided to buy a whole new server and the processors are mine if I want them.

They are matching SL7PD, 2.8GHz, 1M L2 cache, 800 MHz bus, 604pin.

Does any one know what kind of polyphony I can expect from using these compared to my existing single 3GHz P4, and the newer core 2 duo processors (which I cannot afford).

Can Martin (or anyone) suggest a good motherboard to look for on Ebay
I have a SATA RAID controller, so that's not an issue on the MB.
Preferably a motherboard that would use my existing 3GB of DDR400 ECC RAM.

Also, some exceptionally good 3rd party coolers for use in a 4U rackmount chassis.

Hello Bob,

Does any one know what kind of polyphony I can expect from using these compared to my existing single 3GHz P4, and the newer core 2 duo processors (which I cannot afford).

At a very rough guess you might get something like about 1.7 times the polyphony that you get from a single 3 GHz P4 of the same L2 cache size.

Can Martin (or anyone) suggest a good motherboard to look for on Ebay

Can't help you there, I'm afraid!

Best regards,
Martin.

Hello Bob,

If you are familiar with server system, please
skip below.

If your 3GB DIMMs are from P4 machine
(=unbuffered), there would be very limited
choice of motherboard, as far as I know,
Asus NCCH-DL and IWill ...(I forgot the name),
because almost Xeon motherboard require
registered DIMM.

In addition, you might have to buy new PSU
(24 + 8 pin) and PCI Express video card.

JFYI

Sometimes things we get for free turn out to be very expensive.

Hi Bob

I think I would be looking for motherboard from something like an HP xw4100 - which has Intel 875P chipset and I think supports your Xeon 2.8. For what its worth I've got earlier 400FSB Xeon 2.8's and they give a reasonably satisfactory performance on my HP 4000x- I'm sure there out there somewhere- the only problem I had was finding the correct Bios to support the specific processor stepping when I upgraded to 2.8's

Best of Luck

Peter
