HW2 Stop Control

In HW1.x, the MIDI implementation for stop control is limited to note on/off signals. In HW2, virtually any MIDI signal can control stops. What are the overall ramifications of using other schemes? I have read threads on organ chat lists that discuss, for example, the relative merits in terms of MIDI signal traffic congestion, etc.

What does everybody have in mind along these lines?
