Save configuration files while Hauptwerk is running

Ideas for improving the Hauptwerk software.

Save configuration files while Hauptwerk is running

Postby SMann on Sun Nov 04, 2007 4:23 pm

This enhancement request has probably been mentioned before but I thought I would make it anyway. It would be very helpful to be able to save all of Hauptwerk's general and organ specific configuration settings while the program is running.

Since these settings are saved only upon exit, any changes made since the last time Hauptwerk was closed properly are lost if the program should freeze or crash unexpectedly. This can be very frustrating, not to mention time consuming if numerous or otherwise complex changes have been made such as making voicing adjustments on a specific instrument or altering MIDI settings.

It would be great to be able to make frequent configuration file saves to guard against data loss if a crash should occur just as one does for example when working on a word processing document. A user selectable option to have Hauptwerk save changes at regular intervals (a la Microsoft Word) would also be helpful.

Hello Steve,

Yes - an 'auto save' settings function is already logged as an enhancement request. It wouldn't be entirely trivial since it takes a reasonable amount of time to save the files, and so would have to be done in such as way that it wouldn't cause the user interface to become unresponsive or to give any risks of audio glitches, etc.

Best regards,
Martin.

Thanks, Martin. I certainly appreciate what you are saying about the potential implications of performing an "auto-save". Perhaps a good compromise then would be to implement a key sequence that could be pressed (similar to Ctrl+S for saving combination files) that would cause Hauptwerk to save its settings. Since some interval of time will then be required to perform this operation, present the user with a "please wait while configuration files are saved" message box (or even the ubiquitous hour glass!) during which time Hauptwerk would be unresponsive to further input. Even if Hauptwerk had to be in deactivated mode such as when General or Organ settings are accessed it would be worth that slight inconvenience to have this feature available. Just a thought!

I would second this request, Martin. It takes me quite a while to configure a new CODM organ for my console, so I'd feel much better about being able to invoke Ctrl-S every now & then.
