Interesting Issue abou XP-64

PostMon Sep 27, 2004 1:25 pm

Hi again,

Microsoft has announced that the coming XP-64 operating system
for AMD processors (and others licensed by AMD, such as Intel
is now developing ASAP) must be installed on a "clean" hard
drive. That is, it cannot be installed "over" an existing XP-32
operating system already on the drive. Maybe it can be installed onto
a separate partition segment of the drive, but not the same one, and will
not use anything over on the 32 bit segment (but some have tried
this, and are having problems, see on below).

For me, when all of this is available (both HW 2 64 bit and XP-64 os).
I am just going to erase my hard drive, and start over, I think.
Martin has already said that the organ sample sets will be installed
differently using HW 2, so they must be reinstalled anyway. I suppose
starting completely over will mean reinstalling some drivers for
other bits of the PC, but that is ok also (except the problem about
the SCSI drivers needing a floppy drive which I don't have. Guess
when I go to the M-Audio 1010 board, I should also put in a
floppy drive permantently).

Seems some using the XP-64 "beta" copy have found problems in
attempting to have both the 32 and 64 bit os on the same disk;
just can't seem to get along.

Of course, Microsoft still has a few months to work on XP-64,
so will just have to see what comes out next year.

Best,

Hmmm, XP64 later than we think......?

Hi,

Today, a Microsoft emplyee ("Mike Brannigan [MSFT]" <mikebran@online.microsoft.com>)
responded to a potential customer for XP-64 as follows:

"We will be releasing the x64 builds of Windows XP Professional and the
Window Server 2003 (various editions) in the first half of 2005.
We are closely tied to the shipment of SP1 for Sever 2003 as this is the
codebase used to develop these products.

I believe we are planning to ship (dependent on feedback and bugs etc)
SP1 in H1 2005 so should be close to that for the x64 releases. "

Somehow, that reads to me as if XP-64 for AMD type 64 bit processors
could actually not occur until after the first half of next year; at least,
anyway that it will follow AFTER SP1 for Server 2003.

Watch for any further delays in Intel's release of "its" 64-bit desktop chips. That will be the primary factor for when they will release XP-64. I can't see why the "codebase for Win2003 Server SP1" has much bearing on a totally different operating system.

They know which side their bread is buttered on - 2003Server.
