Haverhill OIC organ now ready

Postby David Butcher on Sun Nov 16, 2008 6:29 am

Hello all,

I'm pleased to say that the Haverhill organ is now ready and that orders can be taken for dispatch within three working days.

I'm very grateful to Brett for hosting an evaluation version of the organ on the Crumhorn Labs website. Although it only contains a few stops, the samples are identical to those in the full sample set and there is hopefully enough there to get a feel for the instrument. More details and a link to the download are here:
http://www.lavenderaudio.co.uk/oic/evaluation/

There are two sets based on the Haverhill organ – the full set, which is more or less identical to the original instrument and a cut-down mini set, available at a lower cost. There is an upgrade path from mini to full.

All of the demos have been redone using the final version of the sample set. There is only one demo featuring the mini set – I hope to add some more fairly soon

As well as the evaluation download and the demos, I've added the user manuals for each organ to the website – these are quite detailed and should give you plenty of information about the instruments.

The extended version will be available in early 2009.

Best regards,
David

Congratulations!

My first impressions after testing the 10 stop evaluation sample set:

An outstanding set in return for your hard work!
A Must Have for the Hauptwerk community!

217 Euro for 40 stops (in state-of-the-art)! I don’t believe it. A very very fair price.

I really hope this will be a turnaround for the high-priced sample set market!

Best regards,
Matthias

The swell trem works normally but turns off the blower noise on my evaluation version - a bug??

Hello Iain,

When you turn on the swell tremulant, a tremulant noise sample is triggered, along with HW's tremulant model for each pipe. This trem noise sample also has blower noise, so the organ is programmed to fade out the blower noise sample and fade in the tremulant noise when the trem is turned on.
When the trem is switched off, the trem noise fades out and the blower noise fades back in again.
It wasn't possible to record the trem noise without the blower noise, hence the arrangement described above.

The two noise samples are carefully balanced so the level shouldn't vary too much - however, you can adjust relative levels by using HW's voicing tools, so if you have reduced the trem noise level significantly with the voicing tools (or disabled the rank from loading) you will get the effect you describe.

Whilst investigating this, I did discover a bug - the crossfading between the two noise samples wasn't always happening as it should (there would sometimes be a drop in level after pushing in the tremulant). I've found the reason why and there is an update to correct this here ...

http://www.lavenderaudio.co.uk/oic/Have ... ptwerk.rar

It's approximately a 10MB download.

This bug is present in all the organ definition files and I've just caught it before sending out the first batch of DVDs. As a result, the first lot will go out on Wednesday rather than today as promised - apologies for the slight delay.

This is such good value ...

Hats off to David Butcher at Lavender Audio for such an excellent sample set for the Haverhill Old Independent Church.

Not only is it excellent value (especially when compared with many other sets from other sources) but it is a highly professional package too.

I cannot wait to get my 3-manual 30-note pedal organ finished! But I also have trouble stopping myself from playing the new sample set!

Thankyou David!

Ken.

Bravo, David!

At last, a decent-sized English organ that does just what it says on the tin. Wet enough to be very impressive at home, and dry enough to take out on the road to reverberant churches. A comprehensive spec with just about everything you could wish for in performing English romantic repertoire (but I'm looking forward to a "real" Double Open Wood in the New Year!). Perfect for pre-service waffle, accompanying the Psalms at Evensong, and some Howells afterwards. And incredible value for money. I agree with Matthias - this is an absolute must-have.

Thank you!

Douglas.

1. I’m very impressed by the opulence of colours, the room ambience and the surprising heavy sound of the full organ. The 32' pedal reed of the extended set would be an auditory feast. (The evaluation set appears like a light shadow of the full set.)

2. This set seems to be a good Hauptwerk medicine in the light of financial crisis and the Christmas trade.

3. http://forum.sakral-orgel.de/viewtopic. ... 6075#16075

4. Like Marcus Porcius Cato: I really hope this will be a turnaround for the high-priced sample set market!

5. Like Adam Riese:

215 € x 100 sets = 21.500 € and 101 grateful hauptwerkians
500 € x 30 sets = 15.000 €

6. Best regards,
Matthias

Just downloaded the trial set and played until the wee hours last night. Absolutely charming! A fine example of the sweet voicing and gentle colour palette that good English romantic organs are known for, with unexpected clarity and gravitas as well. I'm sure the full set makes a heroic sound! Congratulations on your achievement.

The Haverhill organ is suited to a wide variety of repertoire.

Here are three new Demos of the Haverhill set to show two of a lot of aspects:

1. You could play music of different styles on this organ. Haverhill is very flexible. (Demos 1/2)

2. The full organ has a very(!) compact, suggestive and motivating sound. I hope you can hear this fun in the black and dirty improvisation "Deinem Heiland, deinem Lehrer". (Demo 3)

Best regards,
Matthias

Hello Matthias,

Thank you very much for these three great soundsamples, showing that this organ is capable for various types of music.

I greatly enjoyed it!

Anton

I've just ordered my copy :-)

Just got it. On first listen it has a lovely English sound. Will be playing this afternoon.
24 bit on all except noises, all releases & loops, and lossless compression on all = 5.19 on my 8GB system.

Matthias -

I can't say that this organ is suited for the Clerambault. The Basse de Cromorne is more effective, but the the Caprice plenum seems out-of-tune, which I suspect isn't. However, that is somehow the impression given.

The Improvisation is certainly fun, and effective. It made me think of our American friends (especially toward the end), possibly fitting since today is their Thanksgiving day.

I'm a great believer in Romantic music being played on Romantic organs. Your Clerambault demos haven't changed my opinion!

Still, I do like this sample set very much. I would look forward to hearing more demos from you, especially in the Romantic vein!
