1778 Pazicky (PSZ) baroque organ - Trial

Postby Csaba Huszty on Sun Apr 12, 2009 7:09 am

Dear All,

the trial version of the Pusztaszabolcs Pipe Organ Samples (PSZ) (touch sensitive 1778 Pazicky baroque organ) will be released earlier to Inspired Acoustics newsletter recipients, on 20 April 2009, and it will be made publicly available as a download later.

The organ:

If you not already signed up to the newsletter, please visit
http://www.inspiredacoustics.com/newsletter.php
to receive the trial earlier.

The trial version will be the same as with the PAB organ: everything fully functional except that there will be a time expiry and the organ will periodically turn off all stops and turn them back on.

I hope you will like the organ,
Csaba

I downloaded the PSZ several days ago. There are 3 separate downloads, and it took forever, with my connection speed over 7 hours. It was more than worth it. This sampleset is superb--small, but with just about everything for baroque music. The attention to detail is wonderful. The very detailed screen shots are the best I have seen. The sounds of the action are authentic, and give me, the player, a real feeling of being at the actual console. But best of all are the sounds of the actual pipes. The realism is uncanny. I have about 20 different samplesets, and this one tops the list for my enjoyment, at the moment. The new samplesets that are becoming available to us now are light years ahead of what last year I thought of as state of the art. This one, for me with only (!) 4 gigs of ram is awe inspiring.

That's nothing James, wait till you download the PAB, some 32GB of files! But at least you don't have to wait a week to get the DVDs... sometimes it feels a bit like Christmas. You start the download, go to bed and the next morning you have a new sample set :-)

Just like you, I'm truly impress by the realism of this wonderful little organ.

While testing the organ, I asked Csaba to add keyboards to pedalboards couplers to have a more versatile pedal division to this organ. Last night I downloaded the update for the PSZ and found that the couplers were there (maybe it was there in the final release but was still using RC1...)Many thanks Csaba for providing such enhancements to an already wonderful instrument.

New PBZ organ

Postby kaspencer on Mon Apr 13, 2009 5:31 pm

I too have just bought and installed this organ, and it is a very attractive purchase indeed.

I like the reproduction of the console and the stop jambs - always so much better than the basic non-specific screen console designs, especially when an organ has such an unusual appearance as this one.

I did note some out-of-tune pipes across the ranks - especially in the upper registers - I suppose that is what Francois was referring to when he mentioned "realism".

One other thing: given that I seem to remember that the couplers were present before I installed the update, could I ask what changes were made in the update?

Regards and thanks

Ken.

This can be part of it, but I was mostly referring to some pipes speaking more slowly than others in a rank or a more noticable "shiff" when a pipe opens.

While modern organs are usually quite uniform across the whole range, older one usually have some of these "quirks" that I like.

If the couplers were included with the final release, then the "hotfix" is correcting a few loops I think that had a problem, nothing major since it was catch by one of the tester... after the final release. ;-)

Thank you very much James, for sharing this! It is an honor to hear your words.

Also thank you for Ken.

PS. The hotfix corrected the Quint minor's lower velocity layer from the second manual and the same Quint minor and Mixtura stops' tuning on the upper octave when the 440 Hz tuning shift button was engaged on the Advanced page. The hotfix is included in the current and future downloads and also in the physical products from today.

Voicing, and the "chiff" ...

Postby kaspencer on Tue Apr 14, 2009 5:36 am

Thanks Csaba, for your answer.

Following on from Francois comments about the degree and type of "chiff" that a pipe may generate, I agree that some degree of chiff is extremely attractive. The organ of Deiter Ott (2003) is an example of an organ with such a delightful chiff.

However, in my (relatively inexperienced) opinion, some pipes are voiced with just a little too much chiff: an example of this would be the 8' Bourdon bottom octave F, E and Eb pedal pipes of the ND Laeken organ, where the chiff is so strong that the pipes (which are all three derived from the same sample) sound like Quints.

This video on youtube shows perfectly how the chiff generated by one type of pipe can be controlled and setup so that it is "just right" (well "just right" to the ears of the organ builder or tuner!)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_CPxaEfFhGI

The part relating to the control of the chiff starts at around 2:50.

Regards

Ken.
