I hadn't really imagined that people would want to 'upgrade' from a licensed Hauptwerk v2 edition to the v3 Free Edition because they would be losing features (especially polyphony and usable memory).

However, if you or other people do want to do that, then I don't see any reason why we couldn't make the Free Edition allow USB key-licensed sample sets to work in the special case that somebody wants to upgrade from a v2 Studio/Concert Edition to the v3 Free Edition, and thus already has a USB key from the older Hauptwerk version with sample sets licensed on it. Hence we'll make it do that for you, which will allow you to use your Cappel sample set with the v3 Free Edition. [P.S. I've edited Brett's original post to add a footnote to that effect.}

Thank you Martin,

Although I'm conscious of how costs can run out of control with this organ business, my main reason for not upgrading to version 3 is that I do not yet have the hardware to suit the features I would like to use, but I'm working on it now. I might partion the drive on my organ PC and install v3 separately for experimentation, although I hadn't thought about the memory limiatation. I've currently got 16GB in preparation buying a new sample set once I get my new console finished.

Hello all,

I very much welcome this free edition of Hauptwerk as a way to attract many more people. I expect a large number of people to download and use this, and hopefully some of them to later switch to licensed edition.
To support this and to help making the free edition attractive, I will make our smaller sample sets compatible with the free version. This will certainly include the Calliope and the Madeleine sample set, perhaps also the Laeken small edition. These will not be special editions of the set, we will just re-encrypt the smaller sets to make them usable with the free edition (and hence also with HW demo versions).

Best regards
Reiner

Cheers. 8) That certainly is a fine promotional gesture on your part. I have been forwarding emails to everyone I know that would be even slightly interested.

Well, a free version..... I begg your pardon you all, but in the finance field, it is called a new "business model"..... The purpose is to sell high end sample sets. Why not?
Ok. I am definitely against software cracking (old fashioned, isn'it?).
BUT!!!!!!!!!!
I have been playing keyboard, and specially pipe organ simulation (I don't like the word "synthesis" because Hauptwerk uses "real" sounds) for two years now. I bought HW3 basic edition for 300€. I am a beginner in organ playing, but I am very happy whith Brut-LeuchtenOrgel, despite of the clics, etc..). And now, a "free" version of HW is coming up.... Hum, hum....

Anyway, let's be positive! My whish: would it be possible to install HW free software, without any sample set, with only 1G of available diskspace (to be able to use ancient computers)?
Martin told me some time ago that the necessary disk space was necessary for St Anne's sample set, but I am sure it would be possible to separate the program from any sample set, thus gaining a lot of room.

You can't currently install Hauptwerk without the St. Anne's sample set, so I'm afraid it isn't currently possible to install with less than 4 GB of disk space. We might revisit that in the future, but for the moment various parts of Hauptwerk rely upon components of the St. Anne's sample set. For example, the Custom Organ Design Module, Hauptwerk v1 import facilities, the user guide (by way of its examples), and also lots of third-party sample sets reference its components so rely on its presence.
Best regards,
Martin.

Well, but will this free version be placed on the server to download it, as trial version?

Hello Peter,

Yes, we're working on getting the site and servers ready for the Free Edition release which is due out very soon. It will be part of the main Hauptwerk download file, so you may either download it, or order the trial/update DVD-Rom which will also contain the Free Edition.

We'll post more information once we are ready to release version 3.23.

Thank you.

Is there any significant change in the advanced version between 3.22 and 3.23? I just want to know whether there is any point to update my system.

Brett, it seems strange to say that the 3.23 edition contains the new free version and one OTHER minor enhancement when, as far as I can tell, the minor enhancement is in fact the free version. Or did I miss something?

Yes you missed something! :)

The release notice contains the following after the Free Edition portion:

ENHANCEMENT HW-001049: Polyphony management system tuned slightly. Hauptwerk's polyphony management system ensures that no more voices (pipes) are allowed to sound at once than the polyphony limit setting specifies. As the limit is very nearly approached, Hauptwerk tries intelligently to fade out release samples (reverb tails) as inconspicuously as possible to make way for new pipes that need to sound. The mechanism has been tuned slightly to make it less likely that more release samples than absolutely necessary are faded out. Please note, however, that attempting to play fast with an excessive number of stops relative to the polyphony limit will still inevitably risk releases or new pipes being noticeably dropped. For the polyphony management system to be able to work inconspicuously the number of stops drawn should not be excessive relative to the polyphony limit setting.

Hauptwerk Free Edition - The Value of Free

Postby engrssc on Sun Jul 12, 2009 5:55 pm

Has any consideration been made to have Hauptwerk Free Edition be made available on CNET? Case in point, Jim Henry offered MidiTzer 216 (virtual TO) to CNET, since Feb 2008, there have been 15,288 or so downloads and the reviews have been very positive. http://www.download.com/Miditzer-Style216/3000-2133_4-10777586.html?tag=pub While MidiTzer is in a different league, the free download has opened the door to many, even some (including myself) that became/are now Hauptwerk "followers".
