Spanish Baroque Organ Composers, please!

PostTue Dec 24, 2013 2:35 pm

Samples of those old Spanish organs with all their trumpets intrigue me. Somehow in my organ lessons, I missed the repertoire of Spaniards during the Baroque period. Who were some, and what form did their music take?

I know most Spanish organs of the period had split manuals for registration, so fugues were probably not a common compositional format.

Can anyone help me with where to look for some Spanish Baroque organ music?

Of course, you may take a look at:

-Cabanilles, Juan
-Cabezón, Juan
-Aguilera de Heredia, Sebastian
-Correa de Araujo, Francisco
-Soler, Antonio
-Bruna, Pablo

Most of the works are called "tientos": ricercares or fanthasies that seek to explore the musical possibilities of the instrument, many of them built with "tiento partido - split keyboard": two stops for one rank; bass and discant.

Thanks for the leads, Luis!

I would guess that if a sampled Spanish organ with a split keyboard is not available, the two hands can just be separated to play on two manuals?

I have recordings of Soler's pieces for two organs, and dearly love that music. Have not investigated other organ works of his.

No Sir¡ Organ Art Media offers one authentic baroque spanish organs, from García-Martinez (perhaps my ancestor) and to be published (?) another from Tadeo Ortega.

To be noted Sonus Paradisi also offers two Spanish instruments, including the famous Bosch's Satanyi -

http://www.sonusparadisi.cz/en/organs/m ... tanyi.html

As mentioned on S.P. Website "The organ preserves the largest existing mixture (Ple) in the world, composed of 25 ranks and 1.104 pipes!" This makes it probably the only working Blockwerk in the world, very similar to what Middle-Ages organs were sounding like.

I own the Santanyi on which I have tried Cabezon's Dic Nobis, Maria. It's just magnificent (excepted the aspect concerning my playing indeed...).
