Registration: Duruflé Prelude sur l'Introit de l'Epiphanie

PostFri Jan 31, 2014 11:25 am

Hi! I love playing the Duruflé: Prelude sur l'Introit de l'Epiphanie but I'm having a killer time coming up with registration that works well.

On Todd Wilson's seminal recording, the trumpet solo is clear, big, gorgeous, and not strident (which stop on that Schudi organ is he using anyway?). I have various sample sets and have yet to devise a registration that recreates those qualities. Either the trumpet is too weak to cut through the recit mixture or it's too harsh.

I'm curious if others have a sample set / registration recommendation that works for them for this piece.

On the Herford 67/XL I use
For the Rec: Choir: Open Diapason 8, Gemshorn 4 Spitz Flute 2 Mixture III
Pedal: Bourdon 16, to choir
For the Pos: Solo: Tromba 8 (box half open)

I've found this to be quite satisfactory if perhaps a little "English".

I've also tried the Great and Swell Trumpets for the Positive ("melody") but prefer the smoothness of the Solo Tromba. The

I have recordings from Coventry Cathedral (Harrison & Harrison) and St Pauls (Willis/Mander) which both seem to use (different) smooth reeds for the Positive part. The St Paul's recording is quite slow.

Hello

You can also use a Cromorne, instead of a trumpet,
it works very well with softer right hand stops.
