Wrong note?

PostMon Sep 29, 2014 4:30 am

Hello all,

I'm currently working on Lefebure-Wely's Andante Op. 122.
Can someone who is familiar with this piece please give me an opinion as to the correctness of the C flat in the left hand, bar thirty one, beat three?
Thanks,
Alan

To my hears it sounds nice that way (__B, B, B), but to my empirical knowledge, that musical writing (B, C flat, B) is superfluous

I think that flat is spurious. The evidence is that the other similar patterns do not match bar 31. In 26-28, and again in 30 and 32, beat 1 harmony is repeated in beat 3. So bar 31 could be different on purpose, but why?

In the Ditson edition, which was probably issued soon after the original in France, there is no flat on that note:

The original French edition is not on IMSLP. I assume the Cb is in that score and replicated by the modern editions.

So, my bet is on an engraving error (as it seems was Ditson & Co's) , but you could go either way. I play that pattern to match the others.

Thanks to all who commented on my 'wrong note?'post.

Whilst I,too, had decided to ignore the accidental in view of the previous patterns, I just wondered whether there was more to it.
Thanks, Erik, for supplying the info re the printing history.

Alan.
