It is James Vivian playing "Organ prelude, toccata- unknown" on the album "Evensong & Vespers from King's". A small but really nice short prelude i think. I have no idea which piece or where i can i find it, there is no information to where it might be. Does anyone know?

Would be thankful for your help, best regards!

I took a look at the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book, because it sounded like some of the pieces from there. The only Toccata I found was by Giovanni Pichi, but was in d minor, not your piece which is in g minor. It does sound Italian, however.

All the other possibilities in FVB are labeled Preludium. It would take some time to go through all of them, and anyway your piece is clearly marked Toccata. I would suggest looking at Italians from the late 1500's, early 1600s. Merulo, Gabrieli?

Or maybe Bull or other Elizabethans or maybe Dutch? Italian is my guess. It could even be an improvisation "in the style of".

Good luck. It would probably take less time to notate the piece in dictation than to hunt for it!

Yes you're probably right, as you say robsig it might even be an improv. Thank you anyway!

I don't recognise it, so I asked James.

Dear Adrian,

I haven’t listened to the link but it may be some Frescobaldi which, I believe, was played by Robert Quinney.

I hope that helps,

James Vivian.

The mystery continues...

Since James thought it was actually Robert Quinney playing that track, I asked Robert, who kindly replied but can't remember!

Dear Adrian

Thanks for your message.

I am playing that track, but I fear can’t remember what it is. The likeliest candidates are Frescobaldi and Andrea Gabrieli. Sorry not to be of more help!

All the best

Robert
