question on accidentals in ornaments

PostMon Aug 08, 2016 8:03 am

two parts, in the key of G:

A sharped G in the bass and a flatted F in the treble, marked as a trill. Does the trill go between F(natural) and G(natural) or F(natural) and G#? TBH they both sound weird to me.

What key is the piece in? What is the complete chord, if the piece is in more than two voices at that point? You might try thrilling between f and f#. Ornamentation in baroque music can be very free in using chromatic notes. It would only be a half- step or a step though for a trill, never an augmented second (minor third).

Flatted F? That sounds like E-natural. A trill from there would go to either F-natural or F-sharp.

If you're really in the key of G-major, where all the F's are Sharped, you might try the latter. If there are other F-naturals (or E-sharps?) in the immediate environment, you might try the former.

I agree a trill would NOT be an augmented second (=minor third).

It is "Polonaise BWV Anhang 130" measure 17.

G# in bass against "naturalled" F# -- I think I misspoke above.

I've been trilling Fnat - Gnat and I think it sounds best of the options.
