Organ Shoes...

PostTue Jan 23, 2018 5:02 pm

In looking on the web for organ shoes, one thing I've noticed is... there are no shoes that I can find that are slip on type vs having shoe laces. I'm not a shoe lace kinda guy for my shoes.

I'm wondering if anyone can recommend tor suggest some shoes that I can use to play the organ with having the larger heel portion.

Thanks

With the demand for organ shoes declining options are limited. As a builder I worry most about the pedalboard and not proper technique. I would recommend getting Organ Masters and a pair of elastic shoe laces. Of course as an organist the thought of loose fitting shoes makes me cringe.

Thanks Matt.

Actually a good idea to consider the elastic shoe laces!

Before discovering OrganMaster Shoes (which are excellent!) I used to follow the advice of other organists in Australia and have men's tap dance shoes modified with a raised heel plus suede leather on the soles and heels.

Dance shoes are often sold by their makers, and tap shoes are normally sold without taps (the metal attachments to toes and heels) - the taps are added later after the customer has purchased the basic shoe. It's not hard for a bootmaker to modify a basic dance shoe in this way. I had a couple of pairs made like this over the years and I know of other organists who made similar purchases from the same dance shoe shop which happens to be just two suburbs away from where I live. Contact a dance studio - not hard to find these days as dance is quite popular - and ask where their dancers go to have their shoes made.

To summarise - find a dance shoe specialist, see what they have to offer in the way of mens' slip-on dance shoes and have them modified.

Didn't Virgil used to wear a pair of what looked to be some type of ballet shoes of sorts? I seem to recall in my head that image for some reason....

Olivier Latry seems to wear fairly normal looking slip-on shoes as you can see here:

Perhaps the heel could be built up a bit if needed as some others mentioned. Depends somewhat on the length of one's leg as to whether that's an help or an hindrance, I think.
