Rachmaninoff's prelude in c sharp minor

PostFri Nov 13, 2009 5:52 pm

Does anyone know of an organ transcription of any of Rachmaninoff's works? I don't think he ever wrote a single note for the organ, but some of his piano works would be well suited for the organ. For example the prelude in c sharp minor (Op 3, no. 2).

This version appears to be a transcription for organ based on the close up of the music at the start - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I7-T2IRkijo with an alternative version at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TArWNq2retM.

I must admit that it works better than I thought it would, although I'm still not convinced. Nothing immediately jumps out as an available arrangement for Op 3 No 2, although various other pieces are available, including the Paganini Rhapsody at http://www.musicroom.com/se/ID_No/072029/details.html or first page preview of the 18th variation at http://www.musicnotes.com/sheetmusic/mtd.asp?ppn=mn0018571

I imagine there will be two schools of thought - but if Bach got away with it all those years ago, then why not?

Thanks for the links, I actually googled a bit more and found that a certain Gottfried Federlein transcribed some pieces to the organ in the 1920s. Like the g minor prelude:

After listening to these transcriptions I'm convinced that if Rachmaninoff had had access to the organ he would've composed some works for it.

There is also a transcription by Louis Vierne. I don't know if it's still available in print, however.

There is a transcription by Dr. A. E. Hull. The second Youtube link provided by Andrew sounds like the one.

Thomas Heywood played it at the opening concert for the Melbourne Town Hall organ (HNB), after it had been rebuilt and enlarged by Schantz. I thought the transcription worked very well under Heywood's hands on a large symphonic instrument.

Thanks! This piece was added to imslp a year after I asked the question, so it's not too late.
