Repertoire suggestions for electric guitar + pipe organ duo

PostMon Aug 02, 2010 7:55 am

I am thinking of creating a recital program for pipe organ and electric guitar.

The guitarist I have in mind is one of those incredible electric guitar virtuosos, a guy with amazing technique, super fast, super clean but also a full musician too, not just speed-of.light scales stuff only.

The idea is to create some interesting events, combining the 2 instruments. The electric guitar can play with distorsion but also some clean stuff. The program could be alternating solo organ, solo guitar and duo.

Can you suggest any piece that can be adapted to organ and virtuoso electric guitar?

Pieces can be of any repertoire, also pure organ repertoire (a "populistic" one could be Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D Minor, may be obvious, but very loved by audience), but also violin concertos (Vivaldi's), ...

Thanks!

Note: this question is not for organ purists ;)

Hello Andu ...

I play guitar and organ, although I'm not all that good on either! I play acoustic and electric guitar, having 9 altogether, including two Strats, a Gibson Les Paul, a Paul Reed Smith and a 1928 genuine Dobro resonator!

However, to get back to the subject of your post, why not try Pachebel's Canon in D major (often played in C major). Then the organ can play a continuo when the guitar takes the solo, and the guitar can arpegiate an accompaniment when the organ takes the lead. The other thing about that tune is that the guitar can play clean distortion-free for some of the variations, but can play up high with lots of distortion, chorus and delay for the main theme.

I hope that helps!

Ken.

If you have a jazz/improvisational bent - try this:

I used to play it a lot with guitar or sax. The organ has the clarity to punch out the rhythm in a half baroque half bossa style. Strange I know - but it sounded great!!

I'm busy with a piece (three parts) for MIDI controllable pipeorgan, two electric guitars, synthesizer and percussion.

Thanks a lot for the suggestions.

It is still open, may be some one can suggest some specifically virtuoso piece, where the guitar will play the virtuoso part. Some violin concert for example.
