Name that tune

PostFri Feb 03, 2012 9:12 pm

Can anyone tell me the title, cataloging number etc. for the piece playing in this video? Unfortunately the person who posted the video did not credit the composer or even identify the piece. I am assuming it is Bach but not sure.

I should probably know this, but I don't. Someone please tell me what this is.

J.S. Bach, B minor Prelude and Fugue (although that was just the Prelude).

The B minor is among one of my favorite Bach P & Fs. Its catalog number is BWV 544.

This is one of the fastest performances of it I have ever heard. Much credit must be given for the technical skill of the performing organist. That being said, this piece is one of Bach's more mature pieces and most noble. A slower tempo, maybe between 60 to 66 beats per minute, would bring out the richness of the piece both texturally and harmonically. When it is played too fast, it doesn't have a chance to "breath". It needs to be able to "sing". Both Marcel Dupre and Albert Schweitzer's leaned toward a slower, more relaxed tempo in this piece as well as much of Bach's organ music.

This is a piece well worth learning.

Best regards,
Greg

My personal favorite recording of this work - Ton Koopman.

Strange interpretation; many notes that are not in the score.

This interpretation is in my opinion better:
