LED lit arcade buttons for stops

PostSun Mar 15, 2015 6:03 am

Inspired by NickNelson's "Cheap 'n Cheerful" console.
http://forum.hauptwerk.com/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=10628

I found these LED lit Arcade buttons at Adafruit
30mm http://www.adafruit.com/product/492
60mm http://www.adafruit.com/product/1192

I want to hear from NickNelson how he interfaced his arcade buttons.

One option would be using the midi-hardware components with the LITSW
http://www.midi-hardware.com/index.php?section=prod_info&product=LITSW

As I'm researching a HW console build, I've learned that a lit button is
an alternative to a solenoid drawstop.

I noticed another illuminated push button at Adafruit.

https://www.adafruit.com/product/481

The description sounds like what is desired for this:

This button is a momentary push button, when you press it the 'normally-open' contact shorts to the common contact. When you release it, the contacts open up again.

The switch and LED are separated, so you could wire it to turn on when pressed or vice versa or whatever you wish! Check the tech details for information!

Altho the following refers to thumb pistons, the same principles apply to using buttons for stop control. You might get some ideas here:

http://forum.hauptwerk.com/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=13905&p=102980&hilit=thumb+piston+LED#p102980

or here:

http://forum.hauptwerk.com/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=12264&hilit=+thumb+pistons

Likewise, if you need to drill your own board(s), suggest using a proper diameter Forstner bit (with a back up board) as this combination makes for a clean hole. This setup along with a small drill press and a simple fixture works well.

One thing to consider is how deep is the push button/LED assembly. By depth meaning how far does it protrude beyond the front of the board so that there is sufficient space as to not short out or touch anything such as the keyboard mechanism and likewise enough room for the wiring. It might be possible to add spacers if needed.

Roman's LITSW boards with the proper Master Controller is a good choice. You can program the button operation to be either dependent or independent.

In my view, 60 mm is rather too big, the 30 mm ones are probably the same as those I used. I'm a bit bothered that the LED illumination doesn't seem to be included (though I might have misread the page).

These appear to be an (US) Ebay source of the exact ones I used.

The interface is of my own design and construction, it is written up here:

As before it is intended as a homebrew project (though I'm be happy to help anyone out if it all seems a bit daunting. I have, for example, a number of spare PCBs). As with all my projects, the idea was to do it as cheaply and simply as possible consistent with fitness for purpose - it won't necessarily be the prettiest way of accomplishing the task but it will work.

I'm looking at the switches on ebay. I was thinking that a momentary switch with an independent
LED was the proper thing, each switch press would act as a state change and HW could turn the
light on/off as appropriate. Does your board handle the arcade buttons as on/off
or as a state change event?

Yes, and thanks for the link. I'm still confused how this is used with HW MIDI output setting.

I think this is the switch in the Jammer Arcade buttons on ebay. From the description I guess these are
momentary switches.

http://www.adafruit.com/product/817

Micro Switch - Premium Zippy 3-Terminal

Micro-switches are often found in arcade buttons and joysticks but they're also really handy in any kind of mechatronics project or when you need a basic sensor. They are always 'tactile' (clicky feeling), and 'momentary' (the switch closes when pressed, then snaps open once released). They come in a few different varieties (mostly having to do with the contacts and how big the actuator is).

This appears to be the source of the arcade buttons.

1. connect the buttons to LITSW, and LITSW (up to 5) to MRG2
2. disable merger in MRG2 (#972)
3. connect to Hauptwerk and do auto-detect for every button, make sure "send matching MIDI output" is checked each time in auto-detect window
