flexible material for laser printing Launchpad labels

PostWed Feb 15, 2017 11:32 pm

What are people using for Launch Pad cover material?

It seems that the kind of cover material I want will not work in a laser printer because the fuser is too hot. My Brother laser printer says not to use Acrylic in it but others have told me that there is an overhead projector material (Acrylic) that works.

Has anyone tried laminating regular paper with the labels printed on it? I am thinking that maybe I could take the laminated paper and cut out little squares and glue them on the buttons. But if there is a proven method that has some flex to it, that would be better yet.

Thanks for any input.

I use Transparency Film (branded "nobo" in Australia). I have constructed a template in Excel of squares covering each of the 64 (or occasionally 81) of the Launchpad Buttons, with a different setup for each of the organs I have. Print using a laser printer, trim a little off the A4 size to accord with the Launchpad size.
Next step is to fix Velcro to the underside four corners of the transparency and top of the Launchpad.
I then afix small white stickers to the underside of any writing, other than the stop name, so that it is a little more visible on the right side By writing I mean the name of the manual, Rugwerk, Hauptwerk etc.

With the MIDI setting up stops and the different colours available it works very well.

I have recently changed to printing onto vellum paper, then laminating the printed sheet. I use matte laminating pouches to avoid glare.

I find that my colour laser printer prints much more cleanly onto vellum than onto transparencies. Often I find that heavy colours, especially red, tend to bleed and run or come out patchy. On vellum there are no problems.

Check out (individual - stickon) Online Labels https://www.onlinelabels.com/OL28.htm?search=OL28&st=s (90 labels/sheet)

These come precut in sheet form and can be either clear gloss or matte finish for either Ink jet or laser printers.

If you do a search (Samples) at the top of the page, you can select up to 3 sheets for (free) evaluation and free shipping.

You can, for instance, print on a clear matte or gloss finish, place (the labels) on the L/P button and place a second (blank) clear gloss over it to protect it from wear (off)

They have a vast variety of sizes and shapes. For thumb piston, they have a .5 inch diameter label https://www.onlinelabels.com/OL32.htm?search=OL32&st=s 154 labels/sheet, again available in clear gloss or matte finish. The adhesive quality is excellent. Found it helps to use a tweezer to position the labels on to the button without getting fingerprints on the back side of the label.

For draw knobs they have a 1 inch diameter label https://www.onlinelabels.com/OL1025.htm?search=OL1025&st=s with 63 labels/sheet.

For example

Image

Samples sent are a max of 3 sheets per type of label.

Also available is a printer template - https://maestro.onlinelabels.com/designer/maestro.aspx

I found a way of using this software which makes the job a piece of cake (or a bagel) which I also like with cream cheese. 8)

And of course you can print in colour Hope that helps to give you some ideas. :)

Ed

BTW, my "method" for changing from one organ to another is to use a different (pre-labeled) LaunchPad for each organ, albeit slightly more expensive. But at $30 a piece for the Behringer model, not too bad, but very convenient with only a single USB (LaunchPad) connection.

This guy will accept a "Make Offer" of $30 which includes free shipping http://www.ebay.com/itm/BEHRINGER-CMD-TOUCH-TC64-Controller-USB-for-DJ-Sealed-Full-Warranty-/172151820775?hash=item28150c51e7:g:3AMAAOSwc1FXY478

I've heard some chatter about having probs with these, but the 6 that I have (and use) never had any issues. (Says he sold 754 so far, can't have had too many issues).

OTOH, I made a setup for a friend using a single (Behringer) L/P and only used the L/P to control the thumb pistons, etc, not the stops directly.

Thomas,
This will be slightly off topic but we use our laser "engraver" and the Rowmark LaserLIGHTS .004" Engraving Plastic Sheet with Adhesive to make stick on labels. This give you engraved quality in a sticker form. There is just something about pressing a stop with loose plastic over top that makes me uneasy.

LOL, I totally agree. I like the tactile feel of a real button. I've resorted to using my Launchpad au naturale with buttons assigned to choice stops on some rows and pistons on the other. With smaller organs you can match up the Launchpad buttons to the drawknobs as Martin did here:
