First thanks for all the thoughts, including the negative ones  - what a negative does to/for me is "make" me work harder to achieve results.

Anyway, here's the winning reply from Roman for all who might be interested:

Hi Ed,
you can change the channel of upper split on the fly with just one
switch.
But in order to do so, channels must be well thought in entire organ.
For example 3 keybaords and pedals can have channels 1,2,3,4, and the
upper split (4th division) will have channel 5. Nothing else in the
organ should work on channel 5. And 3rd division (the one that's
sometimes split) must have channel 4 now.
I assume you already have the split configured and working on channel 5,
so here's what to do next:

1. select unused analog input, you have to wire a switch to it anyway,
so flip that switch now
2. enter #35 to set it to channel 5 (it will affect the 4th division
then)
3. enter #2165 to set that analog input to "per-keyboard channel change"
mode.

When the switch is closed to GND, upper split will work on channel 5, so
you can use both divisions on single keyboard. When that switch is
closed to 5V, it will subtract "1" from channel number of all keybaords
on channel 5, so in fact it will work on channel 4 now, which means
entire keyboard will work on the same channel.

A toggle switch should be connected so it shorts selected analog input
either to pin 1 or pin 2 of analog inputs connector, be it on MIDI128 or
POT12 or MBBS.

And it works - super cool 8) :D

In place of toggle switch, thinking of using a MIDI controlled relay to
do the switching. Since we have lighted thumb pistons on this console,
I'll probably change "this" one to a blue LED or maybe a flashing red
to let the organist know that the upper manual is in the split config.

There's something I don't understand here - probably lots of things! Let's start with “MIDI128 or POT12 or MBBS”. To what are those terms referring? I don't think they're references to Hauptwerk, as I haven't come across any of them. So is this to do with Bome's MIDI Translator?

Follow the dots:  I was answering organsRgreat' s question regarding Roman's answer to my original question. (MIDI 128, POT 12, MBBS are model numbers of products made by MIDI Hardware - Roman Sowa's company).

" A toggle switch should be connected so it shorts selected analog input
either to pin 1 or pin 2 of analog inputs connector, be it on MIDI128 or
POT12 or MBBS.

organRgreat's question:
