Illuminated drawknobs

PostMon Sep 24, 2018 6:39 am

Hello,
Where can I find illuminated drawknobs, or little drawknobs with a LED instead of the stop label?

Indeed, they build this kind of drawknobs, but only for their own organs. They don't sell only parts.

Do a search and save on ebay. They will inform you when there is a listing. Presently there are none available. In June, there was a listing for 70 Rodgers lighted drawknobs which sold for $600 USD. They do appear, just need to be patient.

Thanks for tip. If I don't find drawknobs, what kind of illuminated switch could I put beside mini LCD panels (displaying the stop names)? What do you think about this: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BLACK-4-Pin-12mm-Led-Light-Stainless-Steel-Push-Button-Momentary-Switch-12V-IP65/292160995192?hash=item440626ff78:m:mH0jhnXormaUdDorAwdX4Tw&var=591102402718?

I could see the round push buttons you indicated more useful as lighted thumb pistons rather than in place of draw knobs as far as operating stops. They do look nice, tho.

Another idea would be to use illuminated square 30 mm push buttons such as:

The advantage would be a legend (stop name) could be fixed to the button. And color could represent different stop "families". Could be configured/programmed first push - stop on, second push - stop off.

Hello Ed,
You're right, those square pushbuttons are more appropriated. I plan to put them beside mini LCD panels for the stop/coupler names. I hope I can find LEDs able to display the colour we can select with Hauptwerk. I don't knwo if this kind of product exist...
Many thanks for your comments.

The documentation of this product is very technical and I don't understand it very well. Is the eStop able to display if the stop is on or off?

Hi Luc,

Yes the eStop can display the name of the stop and the status of the stop through the multi-colored LED which is just to the right of the ePaper message area.

I think it is also possible to mount a switch behind the LED so that you would activate the stop by pushing it. It also has connections for external switches like to ones you showed. The switch closure causes the eStop to send a MIDI message which Hauptwerk can presumably understand and change the message on the screen and change the color of the LED.

It appears rather simple to install as you simply connect the supplied jumper wires from one module to the next in a daisy chain and teach Hauptwerk to recognize them and display the colors. Much like setting up the LaunchPad system.

I will do some more research over the next couple of weeks and see if I can set up a small string of three or four of them for testing. Someone else may already have done this too.

Best regards,

Thomas

Hello Thomas,

This is a great news! That means it's not necessary to find any illuminated switch. This information opens the way to many possibilities, mostly concerning the drawknobs.
Many thanks.

Be interested as in how to do this. The Johannus LiVE model uses these, but controls the stops with drawknobs.

I have played this model in their showroom in Ede. When you change the stops from a combination to another, you don't know which stop is engaged, because the drawknobs don't have any LED and don't move. And the mini screens don't display if the stop is ON or OFF!

As demonstrated here:

https://youtu.be/dupIap_9crY?t=345

Seems to be an undersight of Johannus. I believe, along with Thomas, such an LED could be activated by Hauptwerk to indicate a stop being "LiVE". Just not sure of the mechanism needed to have the display module itself activate a switch as in hand registering or setting u a combination action.

Kinda far out, but there are capacitive switching systems that can activate a circuit by means of touching a metal "plate" such as a metal bezel, maybe? Everything, tho, has it's appropriate cost.

OTOH, moving drawknobs or stop tabs (SAMs) would solve the issue as to which stop is "LiVE" with the stop indication via the LED mini display. Kinda as in ultimate, maybe?

It appears the stop changes on the mini displays change sequentially?

Ed
