Fatar Ribbon Cable

Does anyone know how to find connectors for this type of ribbon cable? I'm not even sure what it's technically called.

It came off of a Fatar TP60 that I have. I'm trying to find that black female connector to use in making a breakout board to adapt to a MGB encoder (MicroMatch). (The pinout for this is not the same as the MicroMatch, I've noticed.... I was able to use a multimeter to track down all the pins.)

Do you know the conductor spacing (pitch) in mm ? 1.5 mm possibly?
Assume the end that you are showing connects to the keyboard?

If I'm not mistaken, this cable end basically is clamped into a female
header, with no actual connector being used. You may have to
improvise not musically but hardware wise. There are a couple
suppliers in China that have 500 pcs minimums.

Another suggestion is a Fatar dealer, esp one in Europe. Not usually
an easy pursuit.

It's hard to tell from the pictures, but if the pitch is 1.0mm or 0.5mm there is a
16 pin top interface header that might be worth checking out.

A quick search of AWM 20624 cable suggests the pitch is 0.5 mm.

A search for AWM 20624 connector suggests there are a lot of different connectors available for ribbon cables of this type. They seem to be most commonly used for computer components.

That is the ribbon cable used on the Fatar prehistoric TP06 that Arndt was selling. But they had encoders mounted to their backs that used a ribbon to 16 pin connector which was really weird an that you had to make a bad cable to make it work.

What is this one for? If it is from Arndt and you are going to mate it to a MidiBoutique encoder you've got your work cut out for you. I gave up finally and went back to the encoder, with no velocity that Arndt sent with them.
But I might have some lab notes about them.

Thanks for the tip. I ordered what I believe to be the right connector from Mouser. We will seen in a few days.

I'm not sure where these came from. The pinout is indeed very strange but I was able to figure it out - I think. Again, if I ordered the right connector, I will be able to verify the pinout once my MGB gear arrives.

One of the joys of FFC/FPC is the way the pin numbers reverse on the connectors at opposite ends of the cable. This was not immediately obvious for me until I actually had to flip a cable end 180 degrees since the contacts are on just the one side of the flex cable.

Just a couple of additional observations. I think you ordered the right connector -- the 90 degree version of what is shown in the photo. The vertical version is just one number different, 0528061610 vs 0528071610. I think you will find that the footprint of the through hole pins is identical to Micromatch with the offset dual rows if you intend to make an adapter board. I did a similar board for an MGB velocity encoder, but if I remember correctly the Roland keyboards I used don't pin out the same as yours.

Since you are doing velocity I assume there are two 16-position connectors on each keyboard so it will also be important to get primary and secondary contacts sorted to where the encoder expects to find them. This is the kind of project that gives me a headache, ha, ha!

Yeah the bubbles are there for velocity but not tracker simulation. Your encoder determines whether you get velocity sensitivity or not. The encoders from Arndt do not have velocity in the output.

Quick update....

The first connector I ordered was wrong.

These ribbon cables have a 1.25mm pitch.

There are multiple variants of that connector - straight, right angle, surface mount, passthrough, etc.

Those appear to be for the red MicroMatch connectors on the current Fatar keybeds.
The keyboards that Drew is using do not have red MicroMatch connectors but 16pin in line pcb ribbon cable sockets.
