Yosemite-Thunderbolt-4.1.1-Audio

PostThu Oct 30, 2014 9:04 pm

Hello all¡

My preferred computer for HW´s projects is Mac Book. But this computer´s headphone jack gets very loose and does not make good contact when plugged.

Is HW 4.1.1 compatible with Mac´s thunderbolt port, in order to take the HW sound signal out of this port?

Thanks¡

Hello Luis,

Hauptwerk itself has no knowledge of the physical/electrical means by which an audio interface is connected to the computer (USB, FireWire, PCI, PCIe, Thunderbolt, etc.) -- it just sees the list of audio devices that the operating system presents to it, which in turn is defined by the devices' drivers. Hence the operating system and drivers handle the low-level details. As long as you have a Thunderbolt audio interface then it should have drivers that will make it work with Hauptwerk, as an audio interface with any other type of connection would.

There aren't very many Thunderbolt audio/MIDI interfaces yet, but I believe there are a few. You would definitely need a Thunderbolt audio interface, though -- an audio lead can't be plugged directly into a Thuderbolt port.
Best regards, Martin.

Are you using the correct connector from your headset? You know there are 2 different connectors very close in size.

Thanks Ed.
Mac´s jack is for the 3.5 mm -no the smallest 2.5-.
Are there other sizes close to 3.5 mm?

To my knowledge, only two sizes for the Jack - standard and mini.

Correct. But I recently saw someone trying to use a 2.5 in a 3.5. They had taped the connector in place and somehow got a signal. I didn't think it was possible, Regarding a loose computer jack, that's kinda rare unless the jack was used alot.

I had an older computer that had a loose USB connector. Turned out, after taking it apart, that it was a poor (cold) solder joint on the board where it was mounted. Since I had the board out, I touched up all the joints. Usually if there's one bad (solder) joint, there are more just waiting for the most inappropriate time to show up.

Ed
