OS X Dual Monitor Sharing

PostThu Dec 04, 2014 11:56 am

Confronted with two OS X (MAC) computers for running Hauptwerk (HW). Each computer has two monitors. The "server" computer runs HW, has large memory, multiple CPUs, and connects via Firewire to a pair of Audiofire12 interfaces. At the organ console is the "client" computer, also with dual monitors with touch screens for stop control. The purpose of this note is how to get the dual monitors on the "server" to produce similar images on the "client" monitors. Both computers are connected to the same local area network. Another caveat is that this scheme did not work for OS X Mavericks; one needs to be upgraded to Yosemite 10.10.1.

Normal OS X screen sharing can do it. First set up OS X screen sharing between the "server" and "client" in the usual way. This will result in a sharing window on the "client" that shows both of the "server" windows. With that one can continue seeing both windows (from each "server" monitor), or view one at a time.

The trick is getting these separated. First examine the Sharing control in the OS X Preferences dialog on the "server". It should how the name of the "server" computer, and beneath it the name by which Computers on your local network can access your computer at: xxxxxx.local. Keep this name for data entry on the "client".

On the "client", with screen sharing running, go to the main menu for screen sharing and select the Connection tab. This offers the possibility of a new shared connection. Provide the name of the "server" as noted above. This should result in another sharing window appearing, also with both monitors showing. For each of these two sharing windows, select the view you want, a different view for each, so that the two "server" monitors appear. Then drag one of them onto the other screen and, hopefully, you now see each "server" monitor separated on its own screen.

This is as far as I've gotten with this so far. Ideally there should be a way to invoke this via a command line which brings up the shared monitors and positions these. Am also trying to find out why the sharing full screen mode causes one of the windows to disappear; have queries pending with Apple consulting on that.
