Will 32GB ram be ok?...

PostSat Dec 06, 2014 11:52 am

Hello all,

I think I can finally start my project. While beginning to modify my Rogers pedals for midi, I like to multi-task. Multi-tasking now on the CPU. Will an Intel G3220 processor running @3.00 ghz and 32 GB ram be ok, or do I need to plan on 64 GB of ram? Windows 7 - will be getting the Hauptwerk advanced for use with 3 manuals.

Thanks,
Mark

Hello Mark,

Looking at the spec sheet for the G3220 it shows max memory at 32GB. The G3220 is an inexpensive dual core but I did not see which motherboard chip set went with it.

Hope that helps.

Hi Thomas,

Thanks for the reply; running the processor on an MSI motherboard: Z97 PCMATE; I haven't run anything yet that it can't tackle. Didn't know if it'd be better to "step up" to another system board / processor / ram configuration that others have better luck with or not. I just built my some an I-5 Quad-core system; would something like that be better?

Thanks,
Mark

With 32 GB, you might be limited in using some of the larger wet and surround sample sets, like Doesburg and Rotterdam, or new 6 channel sets like Brasov. You could only load parts of those organs or settle for less than 24 bit. I'd also recommend a 4, 6, or 8 core CPU in the mid-to-high performance range to future-proof the setup a bit, unless you expect to replace the computer in a couple of years. Of course you can do a lot with 2 cores and 32 GB if that's what's practical for now.

Thank you mnailor - I guess it's off to newegg.com after my tax refunds, looking for 64mb ram quad capable system boards. Or better yet, ask my son to give the computer I built for him back!

Merry Christmas,
Mark
