Can Hauptwerk 4.1. 'see' 32 GB in WIn 7 64 home premium

PostSat Dec 20, 2014 6:52 am

Hello,

To keep the long story short: I have recently purchased a new PC and installed Win 7 64 bit home premium.

That version of WIn 7 can see only 16 GB /I know, should have checked before purchasing the system...my previous system was XP 64 professional/, whereas I have 32 GB installed /with possibility to upgrade to 64GB/.

Question 1: can Hauptwerk 4.1. see 32 GB RAM in WIn 7 64 bit home premium? or is it limited by operational system?

If Hauptwerk cannot see more than 16 GB, I will be forced to upgrade to Win 8.1.

The question 2 is: which version of 8.1 64 bit?

I would like to avoid 'upgrading' to 8.1 / technically wise, money wise - new PC, interface../in the meantime my Creative EMU 1616M deceased after 6 years of daily HW usage .....and is replaced by MOTU Ultralite hybrid MK3.../

Thank you for advice.

Hello Vladimir,

Hauptwerk can only ever see/use RAM that Windows itself allows, i.e. any RAM limit placed by the Windows edition inevitably applies to Hauptwerk too.

If you're upgrading Windows at all then my advice would be to go straight to the current version (Windows 8.1 64-bit), since in general it's supposed to perform (very very) slightly better for audio/MIDI than Windows 7, and it's also likely to have the most active support from hardware/driver makers, and application developers (like us!) and therefore the longest useful/working lifespan.

This page lists the RAM limits of the various Windows 8.1 editions:

Thank you Martin, that's what I was afraid of.....upgrading to Win 8.1, which I really don't like.... :(

There is no need to jump to Win8.1.
With Win7 professional or ultimate you can use up to 196 GB.
That should be enough for the next few years, I guess.

Jack.

Thanks, Mixtuur, however, I have not been able to find an upgrade key - in any shop - online or traditional - from Win 7 64 bit home premium to Win 7 64 bit professional ....

If it is only the desktop of Windows 8 that you don't like, you can install Classic Shell (free download)
http://www.classicshell.net/

This will give you a proper computer desktop instead of the over-sized cell-phone touch-screen presentation that comes with the new versions of Windows.
Or you could simply upgrade to Windows 7 Professional.

Hello Vladimir,

It is actually fairly easy to make a few tweaks for Windows 8.1 to have a similar interface to Windows 7, so that you can enter your password immediately and it boots straight into the desktop, bypassing all of the touch-screen optimised screens. (I've done that myself and, once done, I would say that Windows 8.1 is slightly better overall than Windows 7.)
Best regards, Martin.
