New system for Hauptwerk...

PostWed May 25, 2016 6:18 pm

I've had one issue with my Hauptwerk builds that I could not resolve: The size of the CPU. You see, besides the processor power required for my preferred sample sets, there is the memory requirement, I need a bare minimum of 32GB, but prefer 64. The only way to get this was with an ATX motherboard or one of 2 mATX mobos. These, in turn, had a sizable case requirement which could only be set inside the console on a ledge or shelf because they were not easily mountable. That is about to change. I'm building a new mini ITX based machine that has a 3.5GHz i5 cpu and 32GB of DDR4 memory that all tucks away inside of a wall mountable case. For audio, I use an external sound processor that itself is fairly small:

Case: Morex 5677 Industrial Mini-ITX Case
Image
Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-H110N LGA1151 Intel H110 DDR4 PCI-E Mini-ITX
CPU: Intel Core i5-6600 6M Skylake Quad-Core 3.3 GHz LGA 1151
Memory: G.SKILL Aegis 32GB (2 x 16GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 2133 (PC4 17000)
as soon as 32GB DDR4 desktop DIMMS become available, I will grab a pair to upgrade to 64GB.
Audio: Cymatic LP16 which also includes a MIDI port pair.

I've always had good luck with Gigabyte boards, so I'm not anticipating any problems with it. I am a bit concerned with the lack of multi-threading on the i5-6600, but with 4 3.3GHz cores, I think I'll be fine.
I have a low profile HTPC type fan to keep the noise down if the one that comes with the processor is not usable.

I'll post up a pic with the results after the pieces parts arrive and I get it put together.

Hi,

I am slightly concerned about your choice of case. It comes with a power supply that is only 80W. The CPU has a TDP (Thermal Design Power) of 65W which should reflect the average power consumption of the CPU.

I just ran a trial configuration guessing some details with this calculator: http://www.coolermaster.com/power-supply-calculator/ and that showed a load of 150W and a recommended PSU of at least 204W.

Richard

I totally overlooked that. I have ordered a 250W direct replacement that should work nicely. Thank you.

I have been looking into this Cymatic LP16. Do you have any other experience with it? Any positive or negative thoughts to share?

H'mmm that looks real interesting. Moving from 2 speakers to 6 / 8, I'll keep this one in my bookmarks!!

Thanks for the share,
