A passive graphic card for 3 monitors?

PostSat Jun 25, 2016 6:30 am

Hello,
Up to now, all the passive graphic cards I can find on the market have 3 or 4 ports, but for only 2 monitors simultaneously. For 3 monitors at the same time, I only find cards with cooling fan and therefore making noise. Does anyone have a suggestion for a silent graphic card?

Could you use the graphics port on your motherboard for one of the monitors and run the other two from the silent graphics card?
Can you install a second graphics card in your machine? Do you have sufficient spare slots?
Have you thought of using a USB connected external graphics card (I have no experience of these myself... but see https://www.amazon.co.uk/Plugable-Graphics-Multiple-2048x1152-1920x1080/dp/B00A2E1MQA/ref=pd_lpo_147_tr_t_2?ie=UTF8&refRID=AJ07SX6JX1598S2ZHC5Q for an example.)

Hello Iian,
My motherboard (Asus P9 X79) does not have any video port. I can connect a second graphic card, but only in order to strengthen the first one. Both cannot work together. I have 5 free slots. I already have tried an external USB card (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Cable-Matters-SuperSpeed-2048x1152-1920x1200/dp/B00BPEV1XK/ref=sr_1_4?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1466866723&sr=1-4&keywords=cable+matters) but after few days the monitor was flashing and finally was completely black. I have returned the product.

you could look into one of the newer '0db fan' cards (I think evga has several models that have this), basically the card will be passively cooled until 60C (fan is there but won't turn on), and since for HW you are not using any 3d it's very unlikely it will ever get to that temperature.

To run 3 screens I think you'd want something like the 970-ssc, since new cards (10x0 series) are out it is quite possible you might find some second hand ones available too.

Thanks Marco. I just had a chat with EVGA and they propose me this one:

I will probably try it.

An alternative may be an external DisplayLink device, which is connected via USB. I am using the Dell D3100 docking station successfully for about a year with a Mac (which is officially even not supported):

http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/prod ... 4758460815.

This device allows me to connect the computer and the console with a single USB (3.0) cable.

Thanks for the suggestion. As I wrote it above, this kind of configuration failed in my case with https://www.amazon.co.uk/Cable-Matters-SuperSpeed-2048x1152-1920x1200/dp/B00BPEV1XK/ref=sr_1_4?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1466866723&sr=1-4&keywords=cable+matters. I do not dare trying it again.

did they confirm you can run all 3 heads together at the same time? that would be my main worry, while going with a 970 you would have no problems from that perspective (on my 680 I can run 4 screens together no problem for example)

Yes Marco, I had a chat with EVGA and both 1 and 2 GB of this model can display 3 monitors simultaneously.

I use a Quadro NVS440.
It works flawlessly with 4 monitors. (The 450 does essentially the same thing).
They can be gotten quite cheaply these days.
