Ideal computer for HW

PostSun Mar 05, 2017 8:56 am

Hello All,

My PC dedicated to HW is 5 years old and is at death’s door. I have decided to replace it without any budgetary restraint. What could you advise, reflecting the following points?

1) I have no bias concerning PC and Mac. However, I am very satisfied with my two Samsung Prolite T2452MTS monitors and I am not sure they can work with a Mac as touch screens.

2) I am using 3 monitors: 2 for HW and 1 for my music scores in PDF. My future video card will have to support it.

3) Regarding to the sound card, I plan to use a multi-channel configuration.

4) At least 64 Gb of ram.

5) Is it possible to run a computer with only an SSD?

Of course, all the cool fans have to be absolutely quiet.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions for the top you should wish.

Hi Ludu,

I ordered my last system from iBuildMacs (https://ibuildmacs.com). Jon Soliemon was very supportive to find the right configuration for use with HW. I finally ordered a Mac 6,1 (cylinder), which is almost noiseless.

If you prefer a Windows machine, Jon also offers used HP Workstations (https://zworkstations.com). These systems have no limit: up to 40 cores and 2 TB of RAM !!! This should be enough for the next couple of years

It is possible to run a system with only SSD, but there is no need to store your sample sets on an SSD. If you store the sample sets on a HD and keep the cache on an SSD, your system is only marginally slower.

Best, Chris

My next HW-PC (Windows) is Diy-built like I usually did with my Office-machines for the last years. So I have maximum flexibility. My topic PC often crackles and I think it's a mainboard issue.
The mainboard with X-99-chipset I have already bought, the next step will be an i7-6800K and 64 GB of RAM (128 GB possible). The case would be critical because there are only 44 centimetres height in my console and I don't want to place the computer beside it. I have no experience with watercooling and hope I don't need it. Nothing worse than a water damage in the organ console.
For audio I have a Fireface UC from RME which works perfectly.
Best regards
Thomas

Watercooling is not necessary for a Hauptwerk computer. There are many decent, well cooling and absolutely silent CPU coolers. The system tf11972 describes comes close to what I would recommend for a PC.

O and yes, running solely with 1 or more SSD's is of course possible (though a bit more expensive). The great thing: it will make your PC even quieter, since traditional harddrives are the loudest component in a PC nowadays (if all other parts are chosen correctly).

Thank you for your tipp, MrNHanduc :)

So I will look for a big fan-cooler and hope it doesn't overheat. A SSD with 1 TB is already working.
Best regards
Thomas

This week I launched my new DIY-HW-PC. I bought the components mostly following these suggests (except SSD and mainboard):

https://www.heise.de/preisvergleich/?cat=WL-725482

First time I turned it on I thought it was out of order, but it's only so quiet. And it doesn't become much louder when I play a big organ like Hereford in Tutti-Staccato at a polyphony of 6 000 samples :D The CPU-Display is widely in the green range at the same time.
Best regards
Thomas
