Minimize USB Key (Dongle) vulnerability

PostSat May 05, 2018 9:56 am

Obviously there are some issues with a dongle being plugged into an external USB port. I found a way around some of these issues by installing an internal USB port on a Windows PC. With this mod, the dongle can be connected inside the computer. Internal USB ports simply connect to the mother board. You may have to remove an existing external USB port cable in place of this internal USB port. You can use either of these 2 depending on your MOB. Obviously the USB the slot plate adapter can be removed and a DIY mount inside the computer configured.

If for some reason you transfer the dongle from one computer to another, it would require retrieving it from inside the computer. But the advantage is that inside the computer is a safe place for it. You also may need to "tell" Hauptwerk which USB port the dongle is connected to. I didn't find that to be a problem.

That's a great idea. I've got an iLok device as well as the dongle. At home It's not so much of an issue, but I've done a couple of demos and have church installations where there is a possibility of one or both dongles going missing.

With a couple of my consoles I've ended up with a USB hub inside the console. That's another possible place to install a dongle, especially in a public venue if the computer is accessible.

And the above are smaller than a hub with no need to connect to an external USB port. I've heard of a dongle gone missing probably because someone with a five finger discount  in mind thought it was a flash drive. This mod wouldn't work with most laptops, however.

Newegg ships them free and free is good in this case. :)

Thanks for the tip, Ed. I finally got around to doing this at our church installation because I was worried about the dongle walking away or getting bumped.

7 USB 3.0 ports, any speed reduction issues?

Nope. My home rig (that I'm slowly phasing out) is all M-Audio keystations - USB to each of the ports.
