Polyphony oddity

PostFri Jun 08, 2018 2:12 pm

Here's a little polyphony experiment I ran while preparing for an upcoming installation:
Polyphony testing organ 4GB, MOTU 24ao:
Macbook Pro 2015, 2 cores, 4 threads, 2.7GHz (3.1GHz TurboBoost), i5-5257U, 8GB RAM - max polyphony before degradation: 4000 pipes.
Mac Pro 2013, 4 cores, 8 threads, 3.7GHz, Xeon E5-1620v2, 8GB RAM - max polyphony before degradation: 2000 pipes.

The Mac Pro has a clean HW install, and the Macbook Pro even had programs running in the background.

What do you all make of this? It seems as if the Macbook Pro that went for about $1200 new works better than the Mac Pro that went for $2999 new. Later today I will be trying out my personal 2006 Mac Pro with 8 cores, and I will see how they all compare.
