Upgrading to Win 10

PostMon Jul 29, 2019 2:09 am

Hello,
I'm going to upgrade my computer with a new processor (Intel 9th generation) and then I need to switch to Windows 10 (previously Win7 Pro with SP1 - no updates).
This computer is used only for HW and is not connected to the Internet.
After installing Win10, should I get some updates (1703, 1903...) or is it better|safe to stay with a vanilla W10?
And what about tweaks (disable some services etc.) ?
Thank you for your advices.

I would stick with Win *7* (after downloading all the latest updates).
If the PC is never connected to the Internet, then the withdrawal of support from January 2020 should not be a problem.
You will see from other threads on the Forum that Win 10 has caused no end of problems (e.g. unexplained audio glitches) for a lot of people.

Agree 100%. In spite of Win 10 being the "in thing" Win 7 (I use Win 7 Pro with 32 GB of RAM) has proven itself for use with HW as reliable and a solid OS. Win 10 is ok for on line Internet stuff.

With respect to Win 7 Updates, you may want to check out:

Thank you for your advice, but it was not my question.
Looks like Intel 9th generation processors don't support Win7. That's why I have to switch to Win10.

There are important updates for Windows 10 which can fix some memory management problems - these can have an impact on the performance of HW particularly when it unloads a sample set (before it loads another instrument).

I would connect the new machine to the Internet and let Windows update bring it up to the latest level. I run my HW computer disconnected from the Internet but periodically (once a month) connect for updates. With Windows 10 make sure you disable the sysmain service.

Pg 14 of the User manual says
Operating system patches
All current operating system updates, service packs and driver updates should be applied when they are available. On Windows/PCs, also make sure that the latest drivers are installed for your motherboard and graphics card and that the latest BIOS is installed for the motherboard.

I agree with Iain. I would install Win 10 and update it to the latest available before disconnecting the internet. I think the latest is V1903. However HW is not very particular and will work perfectly well even if you do not update Win 10.

I use Win 10 for organs with no problems - I have not disabled anything and it is connected to the internet. However, I do not play the organ in public and do use the computer for multiple purposes.

You may consider to "debloat" Windows 10 if you use this PC exclusively for Hauptwerk.

This helped me to get rid of some nasty audio glitches on a relatively old PC.

Chris,

I have just watched the video you suggest and there are a lot of good pointers in it. However if your PC is not connected to the internet none of the suggestions will make any difference to performance. Also note the comments below from people who have tried the suggestions - particularly the "de-bloating" of apps does not seem to work.

Hi csw900,

I do not know what in detail helped to improve performance, but in my case on this very old PC it made a huge difference. I have never checked, which (removed) apps worked quietly in the background wasting important CPU cycles, which finally lead to the audio glitches I could not get rid of before debloating Windows.
