Windows network stops while copying big files

PostSat May 09, 2020 5:53 pm

Hello all,
last night I wanted to copy a sampleset (30 GB) from my NAS to my HW-PC (Windows 10), which I connected together via WiFi. After the half of the copying process it stopped, the Windows Explorer freezed and it lost the connection to the NAS. Only a restart of the PC restored the connection. As a fallback option I connected the PC with a long network cable and tried copying again, but the error remained. I only could copy the files via an USB-stick.
Does anybody know a solution for this behaviour?
Best regards
Thomas

Good evening,

Transferring large files over Wifi can be problematic; if there is a cut in communication, you may need to restart the download, end up with a corrupted file etc.

Ideally you should temporarily connect your computer to your NAS using a long ethernet cable. Will be a lot faster and a lot more stable.

Also, considering that you also have flickering problems with your computer, you may have other problems with your computer explaining the copy problem and flickering...

Generally copying to a USB stick is reliable and with a fast USB flash drive such as
SAMSUNG 256GB BAR Plus (Metal) USB 3.1 Flash Drive, Speed Up to 300MB/s
copying or downloading large files is the way to go.

Another fav flash drive of mine is Samsung 256GB FIT Plus USB 3.1 Flash Drive,
with speeds up to 300MB/s.

An additional way to go is to use an external NVMe drive which connects via USB 3.0.

Rgds,

Micdev: I have written that the problem also occurred when connecting via a network cable.
I have now found the solution myself: The culprit was the antivirus software (Windows Defender). After I excluded monitoring the NAS folder where the data is stored, the copy process works.
Engrssc: Thanks for the tip with the Samsung stick, but it's not the fastest when writing.
