Intel core i7 860/920 (dual versus triple channel)

PostFri Sep 18, 2009 8:27 am

Is there anyone who can judge if Hauptwerk users will benefit much from the triple channel memory architecture that is used e.g. with Intel core i7 920 (max. 24 Gb)?

If not, one could consider the new Lynnfield processors such as i7 860. In the benchmarks this processor can compete with the i7 920 (which has dual channel and max. 16 Gb), except for Crysis Warhead (game benchmark) for which the triple channel makes i7 920 perform substantially better than i7 860. Does anyone have experience with the i7 860?

I'm afraid I can't offer any advice based on first-hand benchmarks with Hauptwerk, but from benchmarks/comparisons I've read of the i7s, e.g.:

http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/intel-core-i5,review-31674.html

... I would guess that the older 3-channel i7 (920) might give better performance with Hauptwerk. Being able to support 24 GB is also definitely a plus.
Best regards, Martin.
