Dolby Atmos Attempts?

PostFri May 01, 2015 11:02 am

Has anyone attempted to use new Dolby Atmos type speakers?

It would seem this speaker design could be very promising!

Hello Romanos, and all !

I have recently experimented Successfully,
with lining up my Eight Behringer B2031A's on their backs,
Four on each side of my Console,
Tilting them a bit toward the wall behind them In order to disperse their sound from floor to ceiling !
It definitely works well,
with no noticeable loss of highs, that facing them all toward the wall caused.
I have purchased 8 steel grilles, to protect the drivers from things falling on them.

Best wishes to all,
I'll try anything, I reasonably can, to improve Realism ! Mel

Haven't even heard of these speakers but very interesting (also not cheap)! I had recently been contemplating coming up with a design on my own and build a couple of enclosures which would be quite similar. I can see where for HW sound there would most definitely be a benefit of instead of sound coming just from the front of the cabinets, but from the sides and even the tops of the cabinets as well to 'fill in' so to speak the space between the pairs, plus sound being aimed upwards to give more overhead sound, thus creating a more 'wall of sound' from top to bottom, if that's a good way of putting things. :)

Just to clarify: Atmos is Dolby's new spec for sound tracks of films (5.1 then 7.1, now atmos). So there will surely be other manufacturers of this design. The important part is it requires that top speaker. (Although, I do think that they require a second line running to them. Not sure though.)

That isn't going to help very much for folks who have a vertical stack of speakers.
You have to make sure not to cover that top speaker cone.
Or in my case all the speakers except the subwoofers are at ceiling height,
and I would not want to turn them upside down so that the top speaker is pointing down.

for people with stacks they could easily have two as a stereo mix down pair or as the reverb channels on dry sets.

I can envision a large tower enclosure which basically houses 3 or 4 channels per side and instead of stacking individual speakers on top of each other it's all one self contained unit, then you can have that speaker up on top pointing upwards as well.

I'm going to give that a try once the rest of my speakers arrive. I'm using 3 pair of Adam f5's, a single pair of Spendor sa200's, and a pair of Spendor sp1/2s. Each pair of F5's and the SA200's are assigned to individual Divisions and the SP1/2s to the pedal ala Marc's "Divisions Routed" scheme.

Hi Mike,
I highly recommend this technique,
the slight tilt toward the wall is a bit critical in order to avoid HF loss,
and yet get the entire wall height to reflect the sound from the Speaker.

I am getting direct sound from the speakers ,
and reflected sound from the entire wall,
at the same time !
