Theater organ multichannel audio

PostSat Jun 20, 2015 8:59 am

What strategies are best for assigning theater organ stops to 8 channel surround audio that is divided into four, 2 channel sections? The stops aren't assigned to specific manuals the way they are on classical organs.

Depends on the samples; are they in stereo or mono?

Probably you might like to study these recommendations by the Paramount (Theatre) Organ Works, which may help to understand the "philosophy" behind the design of their VTPOs.

And to understand the issues of assigning stops or ranks or chambers to specific speakers it would be also of great benefit to have studied also the Hauptwerk Manual ( Chapter: Audio Routing P 164 )

Four of my theater organs are in stereo. Only the Freedom Morton 3/17 is in mono.
I am familiar with the Paramount and Hauptwerk written suggestions.
I'm still wondering how to best configure these highly unified organs into four 2 channel divisions.

Given that the speakers are identical and the channels are amped seperately I suggest,
- just to blindly follow the "Paramount Organ Recommended Audio Setup"
( http://www.paramountorganworks.com/down ... tAudio.pdf ) and
- let the "strategy" of Hauptwerks Channel Assignment Algorythm do the assignment.

Probably you might have a look on how these algorythms work:
http://leochristopherson.com/Paramount_332.html (click tables)
http://leochristopherson.com/Hauptwerk_ ... page_1.htm

Once having installed the set up following the Paramount instructions and a Paramount VTPO there will be a
stereo audio field where the sound sources / pipes can be located according to their chamber, which also is valid for the effects of the shades .

IMHO the unification has no effects that should be considered when planning a speaker set up.
"Unification takes the extension principle a stage further, by allowing stops to be playable from different manuals.
(The extension principle enables a number of stops of like tone but different pitch to be provided from one single, enlarged rank of pipes.)" Quoted from http://www.toff.org.uk/relay/extensionandunif.html

Hi,

I think this answer should be enshrined in the Hauptwerk FAQ. It is a great response to this oft asked question.

Plus if you start there and do not like the results, you still can do it your way.
