Best active speakers

PostMon Oct 05, 2015 7:37 am

Hi All
Just wondering what would be a real good active speaker to use with Hauptwerk?
There is so many brands for sale so dont have any idea where to start looking.
There is the Adam brand that looks good but very expensive.
Needs to be high quality but as less money as possible.
I will be using a sub also.
Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks a million

Lot of forum members use Behringer, especially 2031a. Search will find many posts discussing them, and comparisons with other solutions.

Pedro,
I love my Behringer 2031a speakers, then I'm using a 15" EARTH subwoofer with a 250 watt Univox amp - they rattle my house really good!

FWIW.... I'm using Event 20/20BAS monitors... I have the V1 which have come up on eBay quite often at a reasonable price... Average about $200.00 USD each. They have an 8 inch woofer/mid with a 1 inch soft dome tweeter. So far I have been well satisfied. I' also have several 15 inch 250 watt subs.

Thanks for your advice,
I did order a pair of the Berhinger 2031a's from Best Buy
Never did try active speakers before so it will be interesting to hear what they sound like in a small room especially.
A dutch Hauptwerk consultant named John Boersma actually recommends using active monitors.
Its probably a good thing to cut out another link in the audio chain,if i see that right.?
What would be the maximum length a person can run a cable from the soundcard to the speaker?
Does anyone know a online company where i could order these cables in the US or Canada?
Thanks

You can order cables from Musician's Friend, zZounds, and Sweetwater. I have balanced TRS to XLR cables up to 50 ft long to go around the perimeter of the room with no audible loss.

I have a pair of 2031a monitors. Behringer (and this probably applies to other brands) recommends balanced cables for the best/quiet performance. This would be XLR or TRS cables. I have a pair of Hosa CSS-115 (15 foot, TRS) cables connected to a MOTU Ultralite audio interface and with the 2031a input trim control at the default 12:00 position they are completely silent when idle. Thus why they are called "studio monitors"

You can purchase 1/4" TRS cables, available in various lengths, from Sweetwater or Amazon.

You can run audio signal on balanced cables over hundreds of feet without signal degradation. That's the wonderful thing about balanced systems.

I had normally used a set of KRK Rokkit RP5 g3's.
Recently I acquired some RP8 g2's.
They are less clinically detailed, but far more natural sounding, despite being older and somewhat battered. (price was right, worth a gamble! Glad I did.)

Just goes to show, shiny new is not always better!
(Now I need to hook up the ESL's for the rears!!)
