8 channel amplifier

PostWed Oct 26, 2016 9:02 am

Hi,
I have spent countless hours searching the internet for a simple 8 channel amplifier without getting anywhere, so have now decided to try to tap the vast knowledge and experience and my fellow Hauptwerkians! (creep, creep).

Seriously, I have bought an M-Audio M track 8 and have a number of passive 6ohm speakers that I would like to experiment with my surround sample sets. I usually use headphones, but it would be nice on occasions to have the surround effect.

So, I do not need a load of bells and whistles - just simple 8 in and 8 out.

I cannot justify many hundreds of pounds as I am only playing in our spare bedroom for my own pleasure.

I would be very grateful if somebody could suggest a make and model that will suit.

Cheers

I bought one of these http://cloud.co.uk/products/detail.php?id=16 on eBay a month or so back to drive some KEF Eggs with - I think - much the same that you have in mind. I was very lucky and got it for about a tenth of the list price (it was rather knocked about). Might be worth keeping a watch out for.

I've been very pleased with the two Rotel RMB-1506 6 channel amps I bought nearly three years ago. They provide six 50 watt channels in a rack mountable enclosure. I got mine second hand on eBay. At the time a few dealers had new units available. The specification can be found here http://www.rotel.com/en-gb/product/rmb-1506. The offer other distribution amps some with more channels and higher output power.

My own fav is the Crown CT8150 (150W/Channel @ 8 Ohms) . This amp really puts out clean sound and doesn't need a fan for cooling. In a single rack configuration, takes up minimum space. FWIW, Rodgers used this amp on all of their highest end installations.

BTW, there is a page of Crown amps available on ebay presently.

Many thanks for the advice - will have to keep an eye open on ebay, as the new price cannot be justified for my little spare room!

Here is another alternative if your cruising Ebay: a Yamaha RX A1010 receiver (good for 6 channels):

With a little research, there might be similar Yamaha models that offer discreet inputs.

You might look to home distribution amps. The one I am using is a Dayton Audio MA1260. It provides 12 channels, 60 watts per channel. Plus trim pots on the back to adjust levels of each channel if needed.

Thanks everybody for all the help.
I've managed to find a second hand Cloud CX - A850 on e-bay for a 'reasonable' price.
So, when it arrives next week - the fun starts!

I have two Cloud CX-A850s working on my two Hauptwerk set-ups. They are great amplifiers well engineered and reliable. I also got mine at a very reasonable price on eBay. The only small criticism I had was the cooling fan noise although not overly loud were audible. They are 24volt fans running on 12 volts which made them a bit quieter running at a slower speed. I replaced the fans with "80mm be quiet! Pure Wings 2 Silent Computer Case Fans" BL044. This mod has made them virtually inaudible.

In fact - I've just ordered those two fans so that I can install them as soon as my A850 arrives, and don't have to do it later after everything is set up, particularly as the A850 will be quite close to me whilst I'm playing!

Hi Brian,
Great. The fans have three wires + - and a speed control wire. You just need the +&-. Ignore the third. If you need advice just contact me.

P.S.
You only require one fan per amplifier.
