Rokit KRK Inputs

PostTue Oct 18, 2011 10:00 pm

I have ordered 2 KRK Rokit 8's.
They have not yet arrived, but I have a simple question.
On the back the have two types of inputs: Balanced (XLR/TRS) and Unbalanced (RCA)

Can someone tell me the difference between the two? Is there a quality difference, does it matter?
Currently, I'm using my built in computer sound card. But in the future I'm going to get the M-AUDIO Delta1010lt.
So does that make a difference?
Thanks!

I would use balanced ports if your sound card supports them... the inputs are physically different, so it's not possible to plug in unbalanced into balanced or vice versa.

The XLR / Balanced connections cancel out any sound that might be added due to running speaker cable near power adapters etc, and may give you the more accurate sound. However, if the length of your cable is only a few feet, you may not notice any issues running unbalanced cables (my cables are RCA / unbalanced, I run them 15 feet with no issues).

Edit: I missed the part where you mentioned the sound card you intend to purchase... from the specs listed here, it looks like you will have to run unbalanced cable: http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/Delta1010LT.html

Hi Joel,

The TRS or XLR inputs are used with instruments that have balanced outputs on them (Profire 610) and the RCA-Phono jacks are used with unbalanced outputs, such as are on the 1010lt. The levels and source impedence are also slightly different, with balanced outputs able to drive longer cables. The balanced cables are shielded (screened) twisted pairs while the unbalanced are shielded single wire or audio coax.

An alternative would be to use a pair of DI boxes between the soundcard outputs and the KRK inputs.
RCAs out from the 1010LT to 1/4inch jack inputs to DI boxes; XLRs out from the DI boxes to the monitor inputs.

Ed,

Thanks for the reminder that I need to change to TRS cables on that organ. :)
